Hi All
just wondering if any one knows what the RTA requirements are in NSW.
1.) Looking at an L series with EA82T turbo conversion with rear discs, assuming would require engineers certificate as only came out in sedan in oz as far as I am aware?
2). I am also looking at installing a 2" lift with 14" wheels , would this require an engineers certificate in NSW.
What sort of costs are normally associated with engineers certificate
thanks in advance
Brett

I agree with Jono (and keep a record of who you spoke to date/time/place/etc), however you should (does not mean that you will) be able to get away without the engineer as the only significant difference is a sedan to a wagon as all other mods sound legal.

Thanks for the replies,
I spoke to RTA, yes a engineers certificate is required for the turbo (ea82T into wagon, as never came came out in wagon )
and also required for body lift, he said you can do a suspension lift for 1/3 extra over std suspension travel?? does that cover a 2" lift kit (suspension or body lift) ?? and I forgot to ask about bigger wheels, imagine they would need to be engineered to!! might have to move back to west oz!

I had a 2" lifted MY registered in NSW from '88 tp '90. Took it over the pits (C'town) with no mention of an engineers certificate for it. They also didn't care that the wheel were 14" diameter - just that with the Yokohama Super Diggers (I think that's what they were) that were monted on them at the time hung out further than the wheel arches. I borrowed a set of 14" sunnies from another subi owner I knew, with road tyres on them, took it back the next day and it was passed no worries. Then took it to NRMA inspector (they wanted to inspect with lift kit and wheels (still with road tyres on, I must admit)) who passed it and gave me fully comprehensive insurance with these mods accepted.
As I said, this was 1988 though!

did the RTA guy give you a rule number to whch he refered to on each topic? Would be handy for you to know so a visit to their website should reveal all the wording.

No didn't get a rule number from the RTA, he basically said the rx sedan was a completly different vehicle to the L series wagon, thought they were very similar myself, I am thinking nearly every 4x4 that is lifted must be illegal then if lifts need engineering, just don't crash into anyone or anything!

I went to the RTA today and the lady told me that there is a engineer at Repton which isnt far away if you live in Coffs Harbour

The RX Turbo and the Lseries Wagon are both 4 Wheel DRive, one being a sedan & the other a wagon, obviously the rx has a turbo engine and rear wheel disc brakes , aside from that I am not aware of too many other differences, just goes to show that the RTA guy has no idea, he was only looking on his computer no doubt. I did put a EA82T in my leone and converted the rear drums to discs and yes I needed the car fully engineered cost me $648- in Penrith NSW.

If you talk to the RTA Tech, ask them to look at the paper based spec sheets they carry and then ask them to tell you the differences...

the differences will be in the ADR codes. My copy of NSW RTA VSS (vehicle specification sheet) # SUBARU 18 sets the wagons apart from the TURBO sedans in the remarks box
"COMPLIANCE PLATE: vehicle is classified as a multipurpose passenger car for compliance plate approval. Therefore it does not need to comply with all passenger car ADR's"
the n/a wagons from memory did not have this on their spec sheet
compare rule numbers on compliance plate.
turbo sedans got # 1,2,3,4C,5B,6,7,8,11,12,14,15,16,20,22A,23B,24A25A,28A,35A,37
