advice sought - brumby + motorbike??

Post by bja » Tue May 15, 2007 4:20 pm

Hi all

Been looking around at 4WD utes, and i think a brumby might be exactly what i'm after. I've got a few questions which i'm hoping i might be able to get some help with here.

My main one is about towing. The reason i'm in the market for a ute is because i own an unregistered race motorbike (road, not trail) and i need some way of getting it around (including interstate). I was going to go short wheelbase pajero/trailer option, but a few of my mates have falcodore utes, there much better both around town and for long hauls. Will a brumby tray be large enough to carry a road bike? How much smaller is the tray than the aussie utes? I put my bike diagonally in my mates VS commodore ute, for example, and has about 30cm of space to the tailgate. It's a bit hard to turn up at a seller's place with an unregistered bike and ramp.. The bike weighs approx 150kg full of fuel/oil

The reason i'm looking at a brumby is i want a ute with some off-road capabilities (wanted a hilux but their tray's are too high), so i'm also interested in a lift kit (so i can hit the stockton dunes etc). Would i need one for dunes/trails, and is there someone in Sydney who installs them at a reasonable price?

Finally, just a quick one. If it doesn't quite fit, is it legal (in NSW) to drive with the tailgate down or partially open and secured with a ratchet strap??

Thanks in advance!

I use mine to carry a KTM 600 around, you have to have the tail gate down but it all fits in! I usually put a reflective vest wrapped around the rear tyre so as long as anything protuding is visible! Ive never been hassled by cops for it!

Hope it hepls!

Would not be illegal to run around sans tailgate

make a ramp to hinge in where tailgate was !

two of my mates had road bikes and they fitted snugly across the diagnal
put the tail gate up and you almost didnt need to tie them down, dirt bikes you have to leave the tail gate down
what lengh is teh bike?

I can fit my DRZ400 with the tailgate up on the Diagonal, basically straps are to keep the cops off my back and stop fork damage. It has been in there the last 3 weekends and will go in there again this weekend! Insert Evil Smile.....

I've seen a big kawasaki on the back of Cameron's brumby so it can be done... I wouldn't do it regular like though...
