Big plans for Brumby??

Hey all, i am in the prosess of saving the dollars for a brumby (targa roof) then wanting to convert it to one NICE brumby
what i am wondering .. Engines?
i have seen a few of the EJ20 turbo's in there, but i'm wondering if i buy a wreaked liberty.. and have the EJ22 and somehow have it just rear-wheel? is this a good thought??
and seeing as i'm not that mechanicl minded i was wondering on who could do a conversion like that?? i have seen the subi wreakers on the sunshine coast, and they didn't really give me an answer ???
well i hope to have my brumby either just before or just after new years, i hope i can get it all to work
any info on the sort of costs ?
and who could do that sort of conversion??

The EJ22 is the a really nice engine for the conversion, one of the easyier EJ conversion and plenty of power to boot.
As far as rear wheel drive all you have to do is disconnect the front CV's and put your gearbox into 4WD and you've got it.
If you not confident about doing it yourself then you should have a chat with the blokes at

You can't use the turbo engines with the old gearboxes. Theres just too much power (that's what I've been told) and you'll rip the box apart. If you want to use the AWD box you can't just have RWD as easy as explained above. Rick Bates drifts a RWD STi. But I don't know what he had to do. And its alos hard to juts drop a AWD box in a Brumby, can be done tho.
One question, Why RWD? AWD is heeeeps better by my way of thinking.

OK, here's my 2c.
RWD will destroy your rear end. I ran RWD in my wagon for 2 years and managed to wreck countless diff hanger bushes and bend the moustache bar. The axles held up fine but with more horsepower I doubt they would.
Rick Bates uses a RWD only centre diff replacement. MRT make these. AWD boxes go fine into Brumbys, just remember to drop the engine crossmember 25mm (standard practice for an EJ conversion) and cut & shut the shifter to fit the hole in the cabin.
You can use the turbo motors with the older boxes, I've seen and heard of this done many times. Varying levels of success though. By far the biggest hurdle would be getting an EA82 clutch that can handle the power. But if you're only aiming at an EJ22 this will suffice.
Personally I feel that if you want to run RWD you should opt for a car that's originally RWD. A drunk monkey could set up better front suspension than Subaru could in the 80's, and for a car hanging its tail all over the place the last thing you'd want is positive camber & castor. I personally would be looking at putting an SR20DET into a 720 ute or the like. Laugh, but it would be cheaper and get better results.
