Oil Filters

For your Subaru engine, would you use Subaru genuine oil filters or after market oil filters (ie. Ryco/Bursons) and why?

For my Liberty EJ22, I can get get Ryco ones for $4.40 or Subaru one for $12.50. I really don't know what is the differences would be (only size differences that is.) But I am talking about filtration itself.

As it has been explained to me, a non-genuine filter is the equivalent to a few wraps of tissue paper and has sometimes a bypass valve for when the filter gets blocked, so no more filtering.......As opposed to the genuine filter the equivalent to a roll of toilet paper that can still be filtering the whole time of service, and has superior filtration in regards to particle size.

Never destroyed a filter to investigate, too messy, so i cant back this theory up.

Bypass valve? Sure you're not thinking of an anti-drainback valve Roger?

The cheapie filters usually have less holes and thinner paper, in extreme cases I've even seen surface rust on the threads and face of the filter.

Not sure about the EJ's but on the EA's I was told by a few people that the ryco/3rd party filters don't have a pressure release system that the genuine ones do, you can see it with the open end of 2 side by side.

With out this release it blows out the oil pump seals which reduces oil pressure and leaks down the front of your engine and can contribute to the lifter tick issue in EA82's, in EA81's it's really just a PITA.

I only use genuine's in mine, but I have used Ryco in the past with no dramas. $12 every 5000ks is nothing compared to what I spend on oil :)

So where do you get the Nippon Micro ones, is there another place other than local Subaru dealership? And what are the costs?

I have used Ryco for both the EJ22 and EA82 carb, have done approx 140k and 5k respectively.

I had the oil O ring seal in the EJ22 go at about 160k... Was an easy fix once I figured out what it was, after removing the drive belts, radiator timing covers and belt. At 5-6k RPM the oil was literally spraying out the bottom. Would stop at street lights and had black smoke coming up from the engine bay as it burnt off on the zorst. Wonder if the Ryco's caused this as mentioned by BaronVonChickenPants...

have only used genuine / ryco and never ever heard of a problem unless the old o-ring was left on..

Interesting!! The more info I am finding, I find genuine better and well spent for Subaru's engine. I guess having genuine lasts longer for the engine's sake!
