Valve clearance EJ20 DOHC

Post by gary2009 » Thu Apr 01, 2021 11:39 pm

I’ve just serviced my heads and the valve clearances are inlet all valves 0.06 exhaust 0.13 is this ok or are the exhaust valve gaps to wide and how do I reduce it as I can’t find small enough shims.

G’day Gary!

Which EJ20G do you have (year) and what model vehicle did it/is it from?

These two bits of info are important as there were three or four different valve train setups for the EJ20G designation!!

Cheers

It’s a GE7 2008 EJ204LP1MB got the valves to passenger side inlet 0.06 all the same and exhaust are out front are 0.10 ,0.14 back are 0.14 and 0.14 the driver side is inlet front 0.07 , 0.07 back 0.07 ,0.06 exhaust is front 0.10 0.11 and back is 0.10 and 0.10 that was me swapping buckets around I can’t get small enough shims all I did was reseat valves and numbered everything as I pulled it down I don’t understand why the clearance has increased they should of reduced. It all started when the timing belt tensioner bolt snapped had to replace two inlet valves when I put it back together I had a bad miss so I replaced the coil packs now I need to change the plugs hopefully will get rid of the miss.

Thanks for the update Gary, dunno why I said EJ20G, you never mentioned that code!

I agree that those gaps should’ve closed up after a reseat job - but if new valves were used that throws things out again and will effect the valve lash.

Can you get new shins from Subaru? I’m guessing you don’t want to wait though. Partsouq are good for genuine items. I use parts from them for the Subarus and our Pajeros in the family. You do have to wait for those parts to rock up though, usually 7 days from order to delivery.

Cheers

When I got the new valves they were ground to the size of my old one by a engine reconditioning ferm because they are close to each othe I’ve set them to exhaust each cylinder to 0.10 and 0.14 so all cylinders are the same on the inlet all are 0.06 in the book it says inlet are between 0.06 and 0.08 so with in spec and exhaust is 0.08 and 0.10 which is out of spec but when you read on outer exhaust valve is 0.08 to 0.10 and the middle to are 0.11 to 0.13 so I’ve set it that way you can hear a little ticking but it’s not loud that’s for your help.

Gary could also try sending a PM to the FROG (Andrew). Hopefully he is still working for the Subaru Dealership.

Ah solid shims, ouch!

Sorry to hear about your leukaemia, hopefully you’re finding your treatment beneficial with you on the recovery path to full health sooner rather than later.

Hats off to you Gary, firstly for taking on this repair (many would bin the engine and put another one in!) and secondly, doing it while taking on leukaemia!

All the best with your recovery and hopefully your Subaru will be back in action before long too!

Cheers

Good stuff on the dremel work! Keep replacing the cam belt, tensioner and idlers within the service intervals or earlier ;)

All the best with the next round of treatment!

Can someone tell me which is correct on valve clearances I’ve been told that on a EJ204 non turbo 2L motor it’s inlet 0.006mm up to 0.08mm and exhaust is 0.08mm to 0.010mm but the service manual says inlet is 0.19mm and exhaust is 0.35mm which are correct.
