Roof Scoop on WRC cars

There is something that has been bugging me for a while now. On some of the WRC cars there are 2 'units' and a bunch of antennae, one is quite small and I think houses a camera - for those on board shots. But the other looks a little like a bonnet scoop that would allow air into the engine. But why would you need air flow at the roof? Can anyone shed any light on this. see pic below
BTW - Go ATKO!!!!- what a #%$%ing legend - he almost won the rally on the weekend. Thats gotta be a sign of things to come!!!!! look out 2006.
Were any of you perth lads able to get roadside?

i believe its a dust extraction system. Yeah i went down to watch the jumps and water splash saturday morning . was well worth the drive. Even though i did have to spend half of today cleaning my b4.

I beleive it cools the cabin, in much the same way as the vents in the back windows of a V8 Supercar do. Reason it's on the roof is it's out of the dust.

The scoop is used to provide positive cabin air preasure this has the effect of preventing dust from entering the car making it hard to see and breath.

I've been thinking about doing rally style roof vents with a couple of patrol scoops ... would look hella cool!

Yes it is a scoop and no special gizmo.
All it does is let air into the cabin because they have the windows wound up.
Nothing special. Ill ask Cody Crocker what they really do at the next QLD ARC.
Maybe even Simon Evans or Neil Bates
Ok now im showing off :P

60 degree in cabin temperature, I think I'd want a scoop too...
But really, its on a rally car, why would it only have one purpose? The positive pressure one sounds realistic too.
They don't have there windows down and all the vents on the car are mostlikly blocked off, because of where rally cars manage to get the dust. Unless you have a sticker coated car with suped up running gear I think it would just look like a ricer component. Like those spoilers on stock Skylines, just for looks. And more weight too keep the car on the ground.
