Subaru announced their new Turbo Diesel power plant at the Paris Motorshow today. Reports say it matches the performance of the BMW 2.0 TDI (115Kw, 330Nm). Sure is better news than the new Impreza 1.5R.

Looking forward to it appearing in the Forester!!

For the first time Subaru will run a timing chain instead of the belt. Should make the 100K service a bit cheaper.

The turbo also looks to be housed directly under the motor. The motor will be nice and short then.

Ecpect it in a Forester by the end of next year.

I thought the H6 ran a timing chain... I'm only going on the time i looked under a mates bonnet and saw the alloy covers and the oil fill point, i'm pretty sure that they were both connected...

I'll take that challenge. I've been wanting a diesel brumby since the dawn of time.

Who hasn't?!? I was even planning on putting a 1.9TDI golf engine in mine. But in a couple of years I am hoping there will be enough wrecked subie TDI's (by that time I will have the money for these popular engines)

TDI FTW!

Might ride out the standard engine then and leave out the EJ plans (i'm sure there's a group out there cringing at the "leave out the EJ plans"). Diesel would defenately be the way to go, but i reckon the gear ratios would also be different.

Interesting how new technology helps make the engine capacity smaller. The power/torque figures for the 2.0TD are almost the same as the Holden jackaroo's (ie: Isuzu) 3.0TD. Wonder how bad the turbo lag will be on the oiler?

I'd imagine very little lag as the turbo is sitting right next to the driver side exhaust port!!

Maybe this means no crossmember mods in a conversion!

About bloody time!!!!

I sold my Legacy GT wagon & got into a Toyota wagon because I wanted a TD.
They've made huge advances in the last 10 years.

Mind you, I'm not sure how many water crossings a 300 degree exhaust housing on the turbo is going to like.....

And where's the air intake going to be? Hydro locking a diesel causes a crap load more damage than on a petrol motor.

The lag isn't just caused by the exhaust manifold. My Toyota 2.0 TD doesn't produce any boost below 1500rpm, but has 12 psi by 2000. Considering that the working range finishes by 4000rpm, there's not a lot to play with (why the hell redline is at 5200rpm is beyond me...). The camshaft timing has a big part to play. My OHC car revs harder than a pushrod 4wd motor though.
Mind you, its a 10 year old design that still has a mechanical pump (diesel equiv of a carb).

It'll go down as a big hit in Europe though, & hopefully that'll mean some performance parts like rechipped ECUs & different camshafts (I hope its a 16V DOHC design)
