There is a post somewhere in the conversions section "stroked ej22", might be helpful.

K&N air filter and a 2.5" exhaust are good places to start, followed by an aftermarket computer.

it depends on how much money you want to spend.. from cams to turbos to full rebuilds...

do aftermarket computers make much difference, they are so pricey?

I can't see an aftermarket computer making a huge difference on an EJ22. I'd agree with Mudrat that the first two big steps would be a K&N filter and a 2 1/2" exhaust, but would probably wager that cams would be the next step. Really depends on how silly you want to go, Brumberty from these forums is running an LPG / blown EJ22 that would give the WRX's a run by the sound of it!

In my opinion an aftermarket computer is integral to getting the most from any modification and getting your money's worth.

Is Brett still an agent for Microtech? If not I'd suggest a Wolf3D, for the reason that it's the only aftermarket EMS I've had any involvement with.
I also think Tighe Cams do a grind for the SOHC EJs:

bang for buck = EJ20T swap
dont bother spending money on cams, computers and head work your wasting your time. The quickest EJ22 around was george's and it still had nothing on a stock EJ20T. he had spent about the same as doing an engine swap
