I did the diese fuel and oil trick with my car and yes it did clean some gunck out of the engine. unforytuneatly it made the ticking far worse.
i eventually had the oil pump rebuilt which has solved the problem by about 95%. still ticks when cold but nowhere near as bad.
If the ticking comes and goes suggest rebuilding oil pump .otherwise a good cleaning agent and a good quality thin oil may help eg. 10/40 grade, even lower still in tassie this time of year

i have been recommended by Steve From rising sun to use shell eco 10 to try and minimise the noisey lifters

I use ECO 10 as reccomended by Steve and it helps keep the buggers quiet

i use shell helix for older engines, i know its pretty thick, and it has reduced my lifters from going crazy...also try some of that stuff which reduces lifter noise, cant remember what its called, but it helps heaps.(it comes in a black bottle and is usually around all those other octane boosters and stuff)

When the lifters start to tick it is generally time to replace the seals on the oil pump. However a change to thinner ooil as recomended by Steve Rising sun can prolong the time before it has to be done.

I tried using really thin syntheitc oil - mobil 1 i think, but it had no lasting effect and used way to much! and boy did it smoke on downhill runs. Oil pump seals are the only way to go in my book - still rattles on startup but thats coz i use a thick oil to minimise consumption and smoke.
