Forester v Outback v CRV or NEW

Post by booma » Tue Jul 25, 2006 9:01 pm

This may provoke some hearty discussion.

Been looking around at a new vehicle for us (2nd hand !) and we have narrowed it down to the above.Budget will be sub 20k including trading in the L series.

Forester - Pros. what can we say ? it's a natural replacement for the L series, quality engineering, loada grunt, lots of power everything,AWD with low range (manual)! and hopefully good economy.Would like the 2.5i engine but available funds may not stretch.

against:- pricey !! looking at 80kkm plus for that money,4-5 years old,and prolly limited or no warranty.

Outback - pros. Again its a soob, love the flat 4 burble.Solid design and loadsa whitles and bells.Slight more space and comfort ? .AWD and 2.5 motor.Maybe too big for us,economy not as good as Forester.

against - price, again soobs hold their value, seems to be cheaper than Foresters. Not sure about economy (any Outback owners please post !),quite a larger vehicle for us.

CRV - (sic hides behind his flame proof monitor !). Pros Like the driving position (high above traffic),motor has a lot of go.Interior great size, hopefully economy good.Part time AWD (see below).Value seems to be cheaper by about 3-6k for same year as Forester.

Against - Its not a soob !. Motor revs high (like most honda's).Only part time AWD,dont have the option of low range.

So really asking owners of Foresters,Outbacks,CRV (if you dare) just to post your thoughts. We are not hardcore offroaders like some of the forum members !,may go offroad 2-3 times a year and then only dirt roads, fire trails etc (none of the rock hopping madness)

Cheers

Honda's can cost a fair bit more to maintain. You might want to look into that to make sure.

I have driven this car many times.. Very nice car. smooth, powerful, and comfortable. He paid 15k or so about 1 year ago, i thnk this model is going for around 14k now??

The Outback would be the car of choice for comfort but for out of the box offroading the Forester would be the choice

Being a Honda the CRV is probably a very good road car but from what i have read about it it absolutely blows off road

I'd dare say that when it comes to selling it in a few years time the Forester would be the pick again.

I'm going to hide behind Asbestos shield too & suggest the Rav4.

Again no low range but AWD. 2 or 4 door. toyota reliability. reasonable ground clearance.
Have no idea about prices though.

I have a manual 98 Forester non turbo. Had it for 4.5 years now.
It's been reliable, the only thing I have replaced is the battery and that's it. Besides tyres and general servicing.

I don't do hard offroading at all, mainly Beach and the occasional forest track/dirt road.

They go well offroad in standard height, though I just recently lifted it which helped alot.

About the only gripe I have is the standard plastic sump guard it came with, you hear a bit about them getting ripped off quite easily, but I never had a problem in the 4 years with the oem one on. I just recently changed it to a subaxtreme alloy one just to be sure.

There nice to drive on the road and handle well, with a little bit more body roll than a car.

Can't see myself selling it too soon, it exactly suits. Fuel economy is good at
8L per 100

I love my Outback, 2002 model, 2.5L manual dual range, climate control, every option except leather which I don't like anyway, got this one for $13.5k (gotta love contacts :D)

As far as economy it depends how you drive it, if you keep the revs below 3,000rpm you'll get 700km's out of a tank every time about 8.5L/100km, that mixed highway and around town, haven't done a decent highway stretch yet.
BUT
If you drive it hard (which is a lot of fun cause the power really kicks in above about 3,500rpm) it will easily double the fuel usage, first tank I got in the outback I drove it like I had to drive the MY, almost redline for every gear change, I got 300km from the 60L tank THATS 20L/100KM

After doing that with a $80-90 worth of 98 octane fuel you learn very quickly how to drive it properly

The other thing to watch with the Gen3 outbacks and libertys are the tyres, take it easy on 'em because they $280 EACH

Something I found very strange but comforting is that going from the MY to the outback or even the H6 Gen4 liberty I test drove, every thing still feels very natural, very much the same as the MY just a lot smoother and more refined.

The best way to decide which one is best for you is to take them for a test drive.

Sorry about the novel, good luck with your decision.

I had an MY01 RX Liberty and now have 03 FXS Forester ("Casper") and I love it to bits. Yes! I have some gripes about it like evey car owner does about their car but nothing is perfect in this world.

Good road height for visual, plenty of room with seats down, good economy - average 9.25L/100 from new and that is combined City/Hwy cycle, manual comes with 20% low range reduction (not much admittedly but it has it's uses).
