Help! grinding in reverse

Anybody had this issue before?

When reversing with anything over ~2000rpm or up a hill there is a rubbing/grinding sound coming from the front left. I could best describe it as what a rooted wheel bearing sounds like- but ONLY happens in reverse so i dont think it is the bearing.

Car is an 85 L series touring wagon with 2" body lift.

Mine used to do that when I had the 2 piece tailshaft to close to the body, it was rubbing on the bolt for the gear linkage mounting.

But it did definitely sound like it was coming from the trans tunnel.

Hey julian,
It's not just the front tyre rubbing on the front of the wheel arch is it?
They will do this in reverse sometimes...

Hi Julian, Mark here, when I had the exhaust fitted to the car I asked the guy to keep the exhaust up as high as possible to minimise the chances of it being hit while offroading. He did a good job of keeping it up out of the way, but it does run very close to the drive shaft and while reversing the motor/gearbox flexes slightly on the rubber mounts enough for the prop shaft to rub on the exhaust. When driving forwards the motor/gearbox flexes the otherway so that the exhaust gets further away from the prop shaft so there is no noise. If you hear the noise while reversing in a straight line this is what you will be hearing.

The only other issue that it might be if it sounds like it's coming from one wheel only is the larger 14" wheel rubbing against the mud flap, but this would only present itself if reversing around a corner with about three quaters steering lock on.
