We rang Suncorp today to insure the ute. What a joke! We have got 4 other cars insured with them and have had nothing but troubles in the past. I don't know why I bothered ringing them again. They would only insure the ute for $5000 until they found out it had a turbo in it. Then they wouldn't insure it at all. I basically told them to get stuffed and I would be taking all our business elsewhere.
I rang Shannons straight afterwards and have never had a better response. The bloke I spoke to was actually interested in what I have done to the cars and we spent some time just talking about Subarus. Subarus in general, WRXs, Legacys, Libertys etc. Just pleasant to talk to some one that knows and understands your interest in cars.
I can insure all our cars with them for less than with Suncorp and they don't care what the mods are. They are also willing to insure the ute for $9000 with out question. I was also told that if that coverage is not enough I can send in some pics of it and include all the work done to it and they will happily up the value.
Excess is a little less in the event of an accident/loss. They do cover the car while 4wding as long as it is a gazetted road/track which includes the beach. The under 25 excess is also less than with Suncorp.
Simple fact is Suncorp suck, Shannons rule.

Yeah, I have heard nothing but good things about them, however I have not used them personally. Might get a quote as ute is due next month..

Suncorp are great if you've got a stock(ish) car. A friend of mine rolled his '06 Patrol @ LandCruiser Park and they covered all repairs even knowing where it had been. They also covered a broken Diff in his previous Prado no questions asked even though it wasn't really an insurance breakage.

Don't mean to talk up a hated insurance broker but, I have just bought CTP and Comp insured for $4000 with NRM@. CTP was $350ish, can't remember the exact figure and Comp was $550.
So for about the same as CTP and 3rd party property I got Comp with all mods noted. I was very surprised indeed. My 96 Liberty is also insured with NRA@, was the best quote... didn't try Sh@nnons though. But 2 years ago they were about $500 more than Fortron/Inchcape who we used that year.
So regardless who the insurer is they all seem to fluctuate a little, pays to get a few quotes every year.

Shannons seem to be excellent and they understand performance cars. They also have a low useage and ultra-low usage option for cars that are driven infrequently, which is quite a lot cheaper.
They will generally also happily insure at a reasonable agreed value.
What I don't know so much about though is how they are once you make a claim ...

I have some experience there. Both good and bad. I had an instance where a truck turned across in front of me without indicating and crunched the front corner of the brumby. Shannon's took the stance that I had to give way to a turning truck therefore it was my fault regardless of indication or not.
However I did talk them down to just paying excess and not affect my rating.

When we hit a dog a few years back Sunsorp was fast torepair and I had nothing but praise for them, but since then they have fail us so bad. When the cars got broken into a few months back we spent 3 hours on the phone to them. They were hopeless, all our details were stuff up. I had the paperwork in front of me, and it did not match what they had on their computer, and they were blaming me. Than when I rang to put the ute on yesterday, our paperwork that was dated 2 weeks ago, was wrong. They had put up the price on Tonelles policy without telling us, as she had refinanced her car. They didn't see a need to inform us.
Shannons seem great.

I have told them every thing about the cars. Lift kit, tyres, 2.5 turbo etc etc. The Brumby has been mod platted too, so it is 100% legal any way. Going to get the wagon modded for the kit and stuff too just to keep things clear. The green car doesn't need a mod plate and is legal as is.

No insurance company will insure a dodgey car. Every modification needs to be certified by an engineer.

Not quite. An RS conversion does not have to be certified in qld. You can get a brochure from the DMT that says in there "if the vehicle came with that motor from the factory, you can fit is as long as all the brakes and suspension are fitted as well" These mods do not require mod plates.
But yeah, what you are saying is pretty much spot on. They will insure it but can use your mods to get out of paying claims., or in the case of my Brumby simply refuse to insure it.

I just talked about a quote with them over the phone.
Looks like I can get my 1990 L series insured for $9000 with them fully aware of all my mods (RS Lib conversion, lift kit etc).
Will cost me $1450 per year and I get a 25% no claim bonus straight off.
Back when I first got this Tourer (when it was 100% stock) I had an argument with a person from SGIO because they couldn't match it up to any car in their database!?!
I'm about to call them again just for fun....get them to match Shannons' offer - should be interesting.

EDIT - Pretty quick phone conversation... If it's been upgraded to a 2litre turbo they are not interested in insuring it at all. Full stop.

These guys are the best. Don't forget your free windsceen every year as well.
They were even half the price of NRMA with my contents insurance and I have an extra $10000 on top and I get $10000 worth of car parts seperate to a car.
I am raped with them and will never look at another insurance company again. Well only green slip time as they don't do it yet but give it time.

thats what the NRMA did to me, numerous times....
may have to give them a call. Are they OK with people 25 years of age? What's their cut off age range?

I'm pretty sure my little brother's AU XR8 is with Shannon's and he's not 25 yet.
I believe that as a Subaru does not have a ladder-frame chassis, the "50mm rule" does not apply in this case.

They don't like insuring under 25s but will do on an older persons policy.
