So about a year and a half ago maybe longer I purchased a 2001 forester with a full service history but listed on what it needed as a transfer bearing. I have managed to get a price from Boxer service brendale for it and when I have tried to compare price with a different mechanical workshop they dont seem to know what I mean by transfer bearing is there another name for it?

You talking gear box ? Or something else altogether ?

If you can find out the part number - get hold of it & then show to your friendly mechanic he should know how to fix it.

There's few places to go if your near Brisbane too ...

Cheers, Bantum ...

Sounds like it'll be a bearing associated with the centre diff.

Duncanm (I think that's his name) on subyclub has just done his in his outback.

I don't know how it'd destroy the viscous coupling, but you'll probably damage the rear drive transfer gears if you do t fix the bearing.

You could swap the rear housing for a known good one. Less downtime on the vehicle this way.
