Sump plug leaks.

Post by Gazza01 » Wed May 11, 2016 9:29 am

I seem to have on going problem with leaky sump plugs. I see the male part of Plug looks ok with plenty of Threads, but when I look into the sump I see that the female section has only a couple of threads for the Plug to screw into. I tried that heavy duty Blue Gasket glue helped a bit. Any ideas out there.

I have been using thread tape - advanced from the white stuff, then to plumbers pink and finally just coz easier for me the yellow gas thread tape all found in a plumbing supply joint or aisle near you. Work out which way to wuind it on so does not peel back as you screw plug in. I add an O ring in place of the alloy washer and do it up only wrist tight - watching as a tight fat 3.5mm thick O ring starts to squish out. Thirty years trial period so be aware . You may wanna go for an Oversize sump plug thread repair and plug when suits you

Have you replaced the washer on the sump plug? It's designed to be crushed to create a seal. This washer shod be replaced every time the sump plug is removed. I've reused them two or three times, and in the early days of "subaruing" I never replaced it and had a drop of oil that was a daily resident after pulling up.
