what have we here?

G'day blokes,

I've found what I think is a rising sun import at my local wrecker and it seems terribly complete. I should have checked if it has coolant in the right places but the photos will have to do for now...

I realise there is a 3.7ratio LSD/disc rear that'd go well in a wagon, but what else here is of value? Turbo, crossmember, power steer... Not being terribly familiar with these things I wonder which intake manifold is it. Is the Turbo engine is decompressed with different heads or pistons? Do they have oil squirters. Is the Turbo engine still a non interference design if it busts a cam belt?

I'm about to do a bit of a rebuild on the front of the wagon, swapping struts, power steer boots, clutch, drive shafts. If I was mad enough to swap the whole crossmemeber & engine, could this auto donor be fitted with a manual trans? Or do I rip the engine management out and fit an SU carburettor. That sort of thing really appeals more to me than electronics.

Anyhoo I guess what I need to know I'd what to pay for it & wether there's a market for the bits. It's all a bit long in the tooth there days but the back end is what piqued my interest most.

Cheers

What's wrong with the car? Why is it at the wreckers in the first place? I look at that and see a car I could bring back to working condition. So sad.

Other parts of interest (mainly to myself) would be the springs, rear control arms with sway bar and mounts if it has them. Some of the vacuum switching gear for the diff lock is also probably useful to somebody.

You could fit a manual box easily enough, I have a turbo wagon that's been converted from auto to run the RX box. As far as the electronic injection goes, normally I'd say keep it and move all of that stuff across as you'll always benefit but my experience with this EFI system is that it can be temperamental when it comes to sensors.

That is a spider intake manifold and yes the turbo EA82s have lower compression, but it's crazy 80's low compression (7.7:1 from memory), lack of intercooling and 80s ECUs made manufacturers conservative with compression. Personally speaking I wouldn't bat an eyelid at putting a turbo on any EA82 if I had the right ECU setup and tuning, run good fuel and avoid knock at all costs.

That could be a bit of fun if you're up for playing with the ea82t.

Lower compression is in the pistons.

Its a locally bought Vortex.
It will have rear discs that will fit the L series, but don't assume it has an LSD, as Vortex's usually don't.
If it's auto it wont have a center diff lock.

you may notice nncoolg's sig - wants that auto box. It may be the box or rust that caused it to end up in the yard. Make an offer for the whole thing and tow it home.

If it is a 88 model or later, I would like the wiper control module (17 pin) that lives under the cigarette lighter and ash tray in the console. if it is before 88 then it will have the wrong one :(

As it is an auto I would be surprised if it had and LSD rear diff.

Looks like it's got a Hotwire Afm Toonga so I'd say it's a four plug ECU which would mean it's a post '87 build if the series II change occurred in the same manner as it did with the L series models.

I've had a look at the higher resolution pictures on the phone, didn't realise they'd be a bit shite for you guys to read sorry. Build date on the firewall is Jan 88 but the Australian compliance plate says XT H/TOP 3/89. I'm pretty sure it's 89 because the stamped 9 character is certainly different to the 8.

I'll try to see if I can get it in one piece, the forklift driver might need supervision;)

Stay tuned blokes.

As long as it is 88 onward it will have the right module (should have) this is the wanted ad I put up a lifetime ago :) Ive put 86-91 in the ad as that is what the book said but in reality it is 88-91.

Did you get it?

Well it's blowing a gale and sporadically pissing rain here atm... but I might get to the wreckers this arvo or next so I can check on all the bits you blokes are interested in.

I'd like the brakes and LSD (if I read the sticker right?) for the wagon. The turbo donk would be cool too but I haven't much time to bite off another whole project and then again young Maggie would rather I saved for the joint wedding account, so perhaps the whole lot would be up for grabs. That might win me some brownie points for being on the PC typing away at car forums... lol.

Which brings me to my only concern, if I were to invest in this as a speculation, what would be a good figure? I don't mind taking things apart carefully and boxing them up for all and sundry. Dad sometimes does trips east for things like Bendigo and Ballarat Swapmeets so I might even be able to freight heavy stuff. However I didn't want to pay $1000 for it and find no one will cough up more than a dollar fiddy for a radio knob.

As I understand it the bits in highest demand are LSD & rear brakes...

The intake manifold is desirable, as is the air flow meter and possibly the ECU.

Engine & crossmember aren't really hot property because ej.

Vortex parts are, well, whatever you think.

Can you guys give me a vague idea what this stuff is worth? I'm not out to make a killing, in fact I'll have to talk fast in order to keep uncle from killing me when I drag it home:)

What do you think brains trust... I'd better get cracking... I'll try to get more pictures in any case.

Cheers

Just pay whatever its worth to you for the parts you want, then part out the rest for your trouble.

The crossmember is valuable because it has the turbo notch BTW.

You got my PMs RE: parts I trust, and Im guessing you got many more, you should have no probs recovering your money.

I'm still keen on the wiper module.

I've sent you another PM.

Ok blokes. More pictures. Wiper module is there;) Wiper motor is there;) Found (all?) hubcaps in the boot. DS door is straight, rest of the panels are good to fair. It wasn't -full- of coolant but what came out was nice & green with no sign of oil. Diff is not LS but you already knew that...

I suspect it's at the yard because the steering column is ****ed. Steering wheel spins completely free & some attempt has been made to remove/disassemble the column, but they gave up without getting the wheel off.

Radio is a bit tatty, dash surround has a bit broken from the top LH corner of the instrument cluster but the rest looks ok I think. All the parts seem to be on the back floor but I didn't manage to see if the column shrouds etc are unmolested.

Drivers door trim is in the boot, not sure why. Instrument cluster is dirty but the window isn't stuck down so I don't think it's been wet.

Boot is full of seat covers, new rocker cover gaskets & blue tarps, so I'm guessing it was much loved & laid up under blue poly before the vultures came to get it.

I'm going to do a deal on it shortly, when it's home I'll see if it'll start or drive.

Sorry I haven't responded to PMs yet but it's progressing.

Cheers

So it's labeled D, 3, 2, 1... is that a 4 speed auto?

Yes, 4 speed electronic auto wth lock up TC, very good transmission.

So, what happened, did it get crushed? Are you doing it up? Parting it out?
