ej22 to l series clutch question

Can someone tell me if I can use full ej22 clutch setup to mate l series 5 speed. If not why?

Are you using an EJ22 motor And flywheel?
Do you have an adaptor plate?
Does your starter motor have the right throw out for an EJ22 flywheel?

Yes Toonga, I have ej22 with full clutch assembly, adaptor plate and l series 5 speed. I have looked for the answer to this question but can't find a definitive answer. I don't have a L
flywheel. I just want to know why this can or can't be done.

From what Ive read in this
document you will need to use the EA flywheel
If you made a hybrid EJ/EA dual range box you could use the EJ22 clutch kit.

Good info there, but still doesn't explain why the ej flywheel and clutch assembly can't be used.

Can't remember exactly why the EJ clutch and flywheel can't be used, but from memory it can't. Probably to do with the EA starter motor throwout. General rule of thumb is that you must match the clutch/pressureplate/flywheel setup to the gearbox. In this case all EA. Best to get a "heavy duty" EA pressureplate to handle the extra EJ power though.
EA flywheel needs the holes modified to suit the EJ engine.

The main difference I can see which could stop you using an EJ flywheel and clutch kit with a EA gearbox is the flywheel itself.

The EA flywheel is stepped and the EJ flywheel is flat I'm not sure that the EJ flywheel would line up with the EA gearbox input shaft if you got the engine and gearbox together.
There would be only one way to find out, try putting it all together out of the car.

The input shaft will line up no worries, after all it needs to be centred for the engine to gearbox mating.
What the issue will be is the diameter size difference. I think you'll find that the EJ flywheel will foul the adaptor plate, then the starter motor won't line up as that's mounted to the gearbox on the L series casing.
I could be wrong though, can't say I've compared the EA and EJ flywheels closely.
Best way to keep the EJ clutch and fly wheel is to encase an L series 5 speed in the dual range EJ front cases from an AWD gearbox. Or just do the mods for the AWD box and go from there.
I've done the first one successfully twice now. Makes clutch replacement parts easy
