Grating Gear Change.

Other day I got in My Brumby which had been lying idle for 2 weeks. Started her up and found that on trying to get her into reverse gear it wouldn't go and on trying got a massive grating noise. It actually refused to go into any of the forward gears. So I turned off the motor and ran it manually through all gears easily , then I restarted it and it was fine. Could this be the synchros/selectors or throw out bearing. Its all ok now. Another thought that crossed my mind was wrong oil in gear box. Any clues out there.

Your clutch plate may have been stuck to the flywheel or pressure plate if its been wet.

What you described to me is what you get when the clutch doesn't disengage properly. I bet the same would happen if you did this without using the clutch pedal (as an example of a non disengaging clutch and its symptoms).

Cheers

Thanks makes lot of sense was just like not using the clutch, and I recall how soft and unusually easy it was to push the clutch pedal in.

I have pulled cables, and even done it in-situ - sprayed good old heavy duty lanotec down cable inner from engine bay to get a like new pedal feel. Maybe lube up the cable and see how things are, or is pedal box flexing intermitatntly ? It may do it again !
