I know there's about 20 threads about Brumby/MY power steering but what I need to know doesn't really fit in any of them :???:

I read a worrying thing on here yesterday about some MY engine cross members not being able to fit the power steering rack (not just the spot welded plate, but the rack physically doesn't fit up to the cross member) And my wagon project being an 81' model I feared the worst with it's early model cross member, after I'd had it sand blasted, painted, in the car, suspension bolted up to it etc etc.

So I test fitted my filthy old power steering rack I nabbed from a wreckers and, well technically it fits but I'm not sure on a few things. I want to know if this seems right, before I spend $$$ getting it re-built (was planning to drop it off next week, then I read it may not fit )

Pics below, basically the mounting system seems completely different from the old manual rack that was in there. On the drivers side of the rack there is nowhere to fit a rubber bushing like the old rack, instead there are 2 mounting holes drilled in the rack which bolt up to the cross member nicely, steering shaft pokes up into the engine bay nicely. The other side, there is a rubber bushing but it does not fit the mounting bracket I have. It does fit up into the mounting point in the cross member, but the bracket doesn't seem big enough to wrap around the bushing and bolt up snug to the cross member, leaving a big gap. Having a quick look at my manual steer Brumby both brackets are bolted snugly up the cross member. I'm hoping all I need is the bracket from the power steering car and all will be sweet, but I am dreading if this won't work and I need the whole bloody cross member as well :(

Drivers side, bolts up nicely with no rubber busing and no mounting bracket seemingly required.

Passenger side, the rubber bushing fits into the cross member but the bracket doesn't fit around the rack, see the big gap between the cross member and bracket, bolts visible

Inside the engine bay, seems alright to me

There appears to be a rubber lug on the passenger side of your PS rack that could possibly be turned to where the gap is which in theory would allow the rack to move up futher.

heres some pictures of mine in an 89 brumby using the standard brumby crossmember. I had to drill the plate out to get the power steering rack in.

I used the rubber from an old tyre tube to go around the rack points, as my rack had no rubbers when I got it.

Thanks for the pics TOONGA, I think I can see the difference now. The rubber bushing in mine is the correct one, square on top and round underneath to fit into the square mounting point in the cross member, and the bracket underneath has a round contour. There is also a cutout in the bushing for a 6mm hose to go through on the back side so I couldn't rotate it. My problem is the bracket isn't big enough to reach around the whole lot. The bracket in yours looks different to mine, taller (longer "legs"? ) I think I need the bracket from the P/S car. By the looks of it though with inner tube bushings these things must not be very fussy with mounting points

Yes you need to use the PS bracket, not the "armstrong not assisted bracket" so you will need to paint your PS bracket.
