I read an old advertisement for L series automatic saying that when the wipers come on or under hard breaking and accelerating it automatically switches into 4wd. Do all 3 speed L series do this or is that for the AWD versions?

not all wheel drive, but the part time 4WD 3 speed auto in my 1985 build turbo sedan was like this

It was the kickdown switch that activated the hard accelerating mode. Was excellent. The mode was not operative unless a switch on the dash was pressed in the on position. The little control box was almost above left knee behind dash, and could have done with some diodes for the event that happened in mine at 100kph - alternator spiked or surged due to corroded self switching fusible link zapping things - as I hit brakes the wipers came on

. A few other circuits fused out, burnt out and Project Cheap Grief lived another 5 years after that

Not sure if it was only for some autos. I rcall UK market wagons getting it without turbo.

My '89 touring wagon has this setup - it's an MPFI EA82 3spd auto. Push the "4wd auto" button in the cluster with the demister switch and 4wd will engage when you use the brakes or the wipers...
