If one wanted something a little bit more modern but didn't want to go forester. Would a 1997-2000 outback be a good upgrade on an L series? or would it not be an upgrade?

Requirements are for the car to yes go off road, and the transmission to be auto. Would the L series be better off road? also when it comes to in the shop is the outback likely to cost me more with timing belts? id only be looking at the 2.5L engine not H6. also head gaskets are they a common issue?
Also whats the fuel consumption like?

Cheers

What's wrong with the Forester :P

Outbacks are nice cars, very similar to the Liberty but have a little better height. I have heard reports that the Outback is not as good with approach angles etc when offroad but a replacement rear bar and a front bumper replacement bullbar will soon fix that issue :)

From what I understand, the Outbacks are a little heavier than the Foresters so I would believe that fuel consumption would be a little more...

I like the space plus I feel like the outback looks like a modern L series and I love what the L series gives you.

The gen2 has better rear suspension and travel, although head gaskets can go on them. If its been replaced already then it should be ok. HG's aren't as much of an issue in the gen3's.
