so a friend of mine is looking at getting into suby. she likes the forester. Question is how well do the GT foresters go off road? she will be choosing an auto one regardless. so the low range discussion wouldn't be necessary.

The Auto GTs go very well offroad - just ask Yarney

She will have no problems with an auto GT off-road it will go anywhere!!

Yay what might be the best vintage for around 6k

Your friend would be nuts to spend $6k on a GT to go offroading.
Try to pick up a high kilometer XT Forester, it's a much better car.

would the n/a motor be a better choice? given one might be able to get a lower spec never model?

I would personally recommend going with the turbo over the N/A. Specially if the selection is the automatic box.

With about $6k, you should be able to get an SG5 turbo, which is pretty sweet across the board.

The auto does very well off-road. That's what I drive!

You should look at the this thread if you want to use the earlier auto transmissions off-road!

6k for an SG turbo in good condition! Not over on this side of the country. You'd be looking at 10k min, even then it couod need work.

All the auto turbos go well. If its not turbo then manual as the 4 speed gearing is way to high for the non turbos. Turns them in to absolute pigs to drive.....

As pedro said they go extremely well offroad. No need for low range and there is generally no kack of power. No clutch to burn and wear out.

what are the turbos like on fuel? had some guy at the local subaru dealer telling me that 450 to a tank is about what you average with the turbo until the very latest model. that true or a good salesmen's pitch?

Why do people insist on quoting mileage in kilometers per tank ?

got me stuffed its so american might as well say miles per gallon. Ive raid about 9L on the highway and 15 around town according to carsales. if thats true than it drinks worse then my old AU3 XR8. but I guess yeah cant take the XR8 off road and 4 cylinder rego is cheaper

Most people I know get 350-450 to a tank with their stock turbos.

Na 400-500 to a tank.

Offroad I'll get 350km to a tank, give or take. The turbo guys get less by about 1/3 of a tank.

This is only a indication....

Found this on Carsales... Not the best XT going around, but if the plan is to have it as an off-road project, it might suit... And it's in the same state as FALCONCONVERTTOSUBARU.

Regarding fuel efficiency, I can quote the figures I get in my car. My all time average is 11L/100km. I drive a good mix of freeway and suburban streets, maybe 60% of kilometres in freeways...

Bigger tyres made a difference for the worse for me. With original tyres I could get around 9L in the open road at 100-110km/h. Now, with bigger tyres, best I'll get is around 10-10.5L. This is a little overstated as the odometer is reading slightly less kilometres than I am actually doing (about 2%).

I really hope Steptoe doesn't read this thread - He'll be cracking skulls over "km per tank".

Km per tank is simply not accurate! My wife's VT can get well over 800km to a tank, we almost managed 1000km out of it once. My L series manages 650 - 700km to a tank in really good driving conditions.

Which one has the better economy? Well, they're about the same, but the VT has an 80 litre tank and the L series a 60L tank... Need I say more about tanks??
