tired old timing belts EA82

Having built up my mongrel EA82 and used tired old timing belts until I knew it was all a goer and about 5000km it would seem.

I have found new belts and tensioners have made EA82 quieter, no longer revs out to 6000 or 6500 as willingly or as quiet, so a new redline is about 5000,5500 rpm

The power band is now lower than the previous peak at about 4200, more like 3500 to 4000 where it sort of tapers off, yet will still zing to 6000 on the odd occasion - just don't sound as good, or maybe it is the double walled Y pipe that is making it sound worse ??

Another immediate thing I have found since new tight belts have gone in - the EA82M now returns about the same economy my 510,000km old EA81 did.

570km for 60 l of LPG

Happy

Good old EA81 tune does not drop off as easily due to its meshing cogs - no stretch there !

Replacing rubber timing belts on any engine earlier might likely have fuel saving benefits??

The belts are pretty easy to adjust with only the fans removed too. Least on an EA82.

Before my last trip (2500k) I tightened up my belts which have about 50'000k on them. Made the lifters that little bit quieter and ran considerably smoother at idle. Oil was not due so was not done. Well worth the effort if yours feels loose.
