Out of curiosity & before I dive in to the fray (with a smile, most of the time!)?. is there a common fault with either the guage or sender unit. Gauge tends to be out of whack and inaccurate

My Brumby is always accurate and always has been - low kms though on mine. I believe my situation is an unusual one though...verified by my mechanic asking me "does your fuel gauge work??"

Edit
I will add that they are susceptible (I believe) to problems with voltage and that I had to replace the standard alternator in my car with a 90A unit a few years ago - and that my previous alternator had worn brushes and was not charging properly at low RPMs.

When first turning on the car the gauge will always read slightly lower than the actual level but this fixes very quickly.

i should have added my brumby is the most accurate only being out by a few litres but my 99 forester is temperamental sometimes its spot on, other times I can watch it move up and down like a yoyo once below the quarter mark ;)

With the subi's we've got it's a case of getting to know each individual fuel gauge.

Once you know this you're set.

Unless it isn't working at all I wouldn't stress about it. Throw a 5L can in the back if you really need.

Cheers

My old wagons fuel gauge never really worked...a full tank would read less than 1/4 on the gauge so I went by the odometer. My Brumby gauge works better but a full tank still only reads 3/4, and the odo doesn't work at all.
Dads L series isn't accurate either, gets to E well before the tank is actually empty.

With the MY's I believe you can take the sender out, bend the tab back a little bit to gain some accuracy back.

AAh the known, known of Suby fuel gauges!, Good thing that the wifes 09 Imprezza RX hatch isn't a problem. cheers nad thanks for the input...I wonder if the smart thing to do is to simply reverse the wiring on the gauge , that way it will never show empty thus never run out of fuel----------------

Give it a go... but it could be wishful thinking

Or are you talking about the impreza? That would be funny - for about 5 seconds!
