Hi I'm new to the l series and I inspected the engine and found that the pulley the fan is connected to is very loose causing the fan to hit other parts of the motor when running! I'm unsure as to whether it just needs to be tightened up or the bearings for the pulley are shot? If replacing pulley will i be able to fix or is it a job for the mechanic? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

If it's the viscous fan, then I'm sure this is connected to the water pump, so if it's wobbling, it could be just loose nuts (in which case just tighten them) but if they are tight, then most likely your water pump will need replacement.

Thanks, I think you are correct that it's the water pump because the nuts are all tight! With replacing the water pump, will that mean i will need to replace the timing belt as well? Also where is a good place to find a water pump for an EA82 around the Gold Coast area?

nncoolg should have a good idea of good location. most parts places stock GMB made in japan pumps in many different brand boxes. ebay and about $80 ? mark.....

thinbk you do need to at least pull timing belts front covers off and front crank pulley 22mm nut.

You don't need to replace the cam belts because of the water pump - that's an EJ thing. But if they're due it's a good time to do them

I'd remove the fan belts and see what's moving in there. If the whole shaft is moving then your water pump is cactus - but I would think that if this was the case you would have noticed a loss of coolant due a shot seal well before significant shaft play.

The other thing it could be is a shot viscous clutch on the fan itself. Or the screws that hold the fan to the viscous clutch mechanism are loose/missing.

and when/if you go to buy a new pump someone may ask if it is 105 or 110mm deck height

No worries Palmypunk. You can change the water pump without removing the timing belts (or covers). Like Jonno (steptoe) mentioned, you will need to know the deck height of the pump, so best to remove the pump and take with you to the parts place. I'd make sure you get the water pump gasket and o'ring seal in the kit.

Like Bennie mentioned, remove the fan belts (I'd loosen the nuts first) then remove the viscous fan and pulley. From there you should be able to see the mounting bolts.

an open ended 22mm spanner fits nice on the viscous fan stalk while undo the 10mm nuts...
