96 Outback auto intermittent stalling

Hi,

I'm having intermittent issues with my 96 Outback limited auto.
At random times while driving or idling, it may stall.
Sometimes it'll start right up, others it'll take a few tries, and when that happens, giving throttle won't do anything to keep revs up.
When it dies, the revs will just drop, power steering goes, like when the key's at second stage before you turn on the motor.

This has all the info so far.

Tomorrow, I'm getting the crank sensor changed. And apparently the mechanic cleaned the IAC and EGR valve and it ran fine, but whether it was just not stalling or it's fixed I don't know.

Any info is hugely appreciated, havn't had the car for almost 2 months now, I need it for work.

Sounds more like the MAF sensor to me, Someone please correct me if im wrong!

I thought of that, I tried tapping it while the car was on, and tried unplugging it when the car was on- tapping did nothing, and unplugging it killed the car right away.
Would this mean it's working as it should?

It should cause the car to stall if unplugged but this doesn't mean it's working 100% correctly. Try finding someone closeby with the same car and swap items around one weekend and see how things go

Are the airhoses connected from manifold & engine to the airbox pipe?
I would swap the MAF sensor from another Subaru also ignition module as well.
Since you're in Ringwood - theres another outback sitting there with complete as i checked last friday - grab parts there.

Hi.
Had the same problems with my 98 RX (same motor) Has been getting slowly worse over the past couple of months, now undriveable. After much research decided to bite the bullet and buy a new MAF sensor. Less than $100 including overnight delivery. Magic all fixed, drives like a dream.
Tried cleaning it first to no avail. Best $100 I ever spent. Took all of five minutes to change.

Cant really clean them as they are the most sensitive part.

I agree with AP, these Air Flow Meters don't like cleaning fluid. I'd try a good known one.

I'd also look at replacing both Crank Angle Sensor and Cam Angle Sensor
