Flared fenders/widebody Brumby

So after the hail the Brumby needs a significant amount of bodywork and then almost a complete respray. We were going to take the opportunity to put on some over fenders to make the existing tyres/wheels and any future options legal. However considering the paint needs to be redone I would prefer to roll/flare the guards rather than a stick/bolt on over fender. Just wondering if anyone has done this before/got pictures of one or even thought about it themselves.

Keen to hear ideas, problems and any other options.

Nah you have to do it like our models :)

I am about to do it to the real thing now that my WRX running gear is under it and the track has been increase nearly 100mm !! But still haven't decided exactly how. Would like to use GD WRX guards but to do the rear needs 1/4 panels and doors. Have thought about GD front guards for the rear as well but not sure if that will look any good. Have also thought about just splitting the Brumby guards and widening them from the top. I have spare front & rear guards so this is probably the way I will try first.

You need one of these ... :)

English-wheel-kit ...

Bit tricky to use with one person, best results with two + the rear guard would have to be 'removed' ... :)
But if you are already doing it, should not a problem.

Does that come with 20years of body-building experience so that you can actually make something that looks like its supposed to ??

That only folds the inside lip up so it sits flush against the guard - gains you an extra 5mm or so

Ha - Find someone who knows how to use it to give you some tips ...
+ bit of practice on some scrap beforehand wouldn't hurt ... ;)

Don't look here though, as I've only played with it & having varing results ... :)

those guard rollers wont work for the oldschool subi 4 stud either.

a paintless dent repair guy might be able to do something?

There was a show on CH31 that showed two "mature" panel beaters from Dandenong doing some amazing things with tools like that.
I think CH 31 sells the dvd's of their shows, their abilities to create curved car panels from flat sheet and to modify or repair panels is very educational.
Worthwile watching.

I wish I had the time/skill to give this a go however I think my time is better spent finishing the rest of the ute with engine/interior/driveline work. I am fortunate enough to know quite a few panel shops capable of this job through my business. (http://www.ausgarage.com.au) My main question was had anyone done it before/ have any thoughts on what they would do if they were to go for rolled guards? Or would you go a fibreglass or metal overfender blended in?

There is always someone on here with a crazy or interesting thought so throw them at me ;)

Definitely metal and welded on.

Yeah that is one of my options for doing it.

I've seen it done in the flesh on a GD WRX where they made the existing flare even wider - looked awesome !!

^ I'd be looking into doing it this way - find a vehicle that has a factory flare on it that is suitable, cut it out and weld it into your guard. Smooth it over and if you do the job properly it won't crack along the weld/seam and you wouldn't know what was done by just looking at it.
Trippy background on that forum! Clever though.

Yeah they even sell kits to get that 22B look with the 2 door and significantly widened quarters and arches. Pretty cool, the trick I guess with the brumby is it is very boxy so I wonder whether the curves would look quite odd.

I must admit I really like the idea of a smooth subtle finish with a weld on fender. Bolt on's can look great but to me really have to be done properly or they can look very out of place.

Any guesses of a suitable donor? is it worth looking in the subaru family or just a matter of taking measurements and going for a shopping trip to the wreckers

I've had a look at some suitable donors over the past few weeks and I have come to 3 conclusions : GC or GD WRX, or just widened Brumby

GD would be top of the list since they are quite square and lets face it both the models have been done with GD fenders and they look awesome.

Widening the Brumby guards is possibly the cheapest option and you could probably get the GD look as well.
