Rear window seals...rubber hens teeth?

Post by Silverbullet » Mon Dec 31, 2012 9:11 pm

In the process of tracking down parts I definitely will need for the wagon and have hit a snag on a couple of window seals. Specifically the two little windows on the sides of the cargo bay; those parallelogram windows with their own specially shaped rubber seals: Mine are both perished like most of the rubber on this car :|

Extensive googling and searching parts sites here and in the US has yielded no results, so are these bits of rubber some of the rarest parts to find new? Have come across a few little things like that so far. If so then I'm in a bit of a pickle

No luck, I might have to try and adapt a seal for another car to fit. Was thinking the old Datsun wagon rear quarter windows look pretty similar, may be too big though. There must be something out there, otherwise I'm doomed :-|

Adapting won't work. You'd want to contact a mob that does rubber seals and see if they can make up a set for you. Best place to find those joints (in the past) was by reading car mags that feature vehicles of the older generation that people are restoring - I'm talking old school such as vehicles from the 60s-70s. You should find an add in there of a mob that does window and door seals. Contact them and find out what they can do for you.

Or contact the guys on ebay that sell the front windscreen rubber and see what they can come up with ;) But buy some of those car mags anyway

It might not be cheap but it'd be miles ahead of adapting a set from another car!

Two options I can think of:

Local : Bill Murray's auto rubber.
O/S: Steele restoration. Expensive but good stuff.

Neither will have specific to suit a Subaru, but they should be able to match the profile if you send them a sample.

The 1984 MY wagon I saw today had pretty decent rubber on it...
1989 Brumby - Shiny new red paint, stroked EJ20 phase 2 SOHC with Darton sleeves bored to EJ22, Wiseco high-compression pistons, Delta 2000 grind cams , EJ/XT6 5 stud with WRX 4/2 pots, 5-speed, 86 GTS seats and so much more.
Contact me for reproduction XT6 hubs...and EA82 rear discs.

Just made mine myself for Claudia. You can't buy them, Novus or major windscreen mob and ask WB01 rubber stripping. And make your own, it isn't perfect but should get you out of trouble. PM for more details, i can get some and send some pics too.

Home made seals? Looks like the factory ones are in 4 pieces but they are all joined/sealed together. Would have thought the sharp corners are hard to replicate? I'd be keen for some pics.

Thanks for the links dfoyl, when I get the old rubbers out I could keep them as samples...hopefully in one piece  And Bennie that's a good idea, there must be a magazine or two for those who restore old jap cars (Datsuns, Toyotas, Hondas etc) I've seen plenty around.

A few leads to follow up, thanks guys

I am about to have several ( Ie more than 2 but less than 6) MY wagons ( 2to4 touring - 1to2 plain) delivered to my mates wreaking yard/workshop in southern Adelaide in the next month. I have one plain one and one touring one there ATM. At least one of which I want to have all the window glass removed from so I can store them at home if I ever need a spare piece of glass in a hurry. I you want any parts , or want to remove the glass and keep the seals , thats all possible. PM me with mobile number and I'll sms you if you like.

I have a spare pair of almost mint gold/beige touring wagon front seats out of the 83 touring wagon that was at u pul it south , that got crushed 6 weeks ago, but there was a single white plain one there 4 weeks ago that I have the rear gray seats from.

cheers

How bad a condition are the rubber's in ?

You can make 'em last a bit longer by putting some rubber grease on them, will help to rejuvinate them ... :)

Cheers, Bantum ...

How bad a condition? Well I got one glass out today with rubber intact, as I carefully separated the rubber from the glass it fell apart in my hands...probably a bit too far gone for the rubber grease  I could use something like that on my door and window seals though, since they aren't available either I have to make them last.
