An interesting read. There are some slight details that are in accurate from what I know and the details on the development of the Subaru AWD gearbox isn't accurate - I believe the first one developed was for the vortex and RXII coupe in '87 onwards models. This document makes it sound like the first one came from a 70's leone or an early 80's MY RX leone - it's a bit hazy!

Otherwise a great read!

Hmm that cannot be right - when I was in rovers (young adult scouts), a couple of the guys had Subaru AWD wagons.... and that was in 84/85....

Also someone I worked with had one in 88, and it was not a young car (had done a lot of miles by then!) - perhaps late 70's at a guess... also AWD as far as I remember.

Are you sure you're not confusing the 4 in the 4WD emblem with an A for AWD? This is the standard emblem from a US BRAT:

As you can see the 4 is very close to an A. And I can tell you that very rarely these vehicles were All wheel drive or FULL TIME 4wd - they were all only part time 4wd or PT4wd as it's commonly referred to.

I'd be keen to see these vehicles and to know that they're stock!

while on topic of rumours - from same guy with genuine Subie experience from yesteryear has fed me - MY touring wagons came out with 5 speed 4WD boxes. He has also told me to block off EA82T EGR gains 10kW - I have already disproved that.

Though yet to see or disprove the rear handbraked Alcyone he nicked a brake set from for his Brumby WRX he built some 12 years ago or more, running Impreza eng cross member
