I'm pretty sure its not the beefed up 6 speed that the sti gets. Its just a 5 speed that has a 6th ratio.

Seems like the manual conversion doesnt work well with later models having vdc.

Still, a man can dream and i'd love to see the full potential of my car.. Soft auto's just let down the engines big time

+1

All 6th gear does though is allow a harder launch off the line.

Is a fool yes that underestimates a H6 in anger...

Yeh gearbox was very smooth and it was great to drive.

So I should pick her up this Monday.
So what should I start looking at regarding cheap mods, etc?

The usual - induction, exhaust...oh and a supercharger should push things along

What???

6th gear is the highest gear and has nothing to do with launching

I am assuming it means that it spreads the ratios out so 1st subsequently has a better launching ratio...
Where can I source a user manual for this car online? They downloadable?

Bought an '06 3.0r-b earlier this year, the gearbox is the same as the sti but missing the dccd and front lsd. The new diesel 6 speed in the forester and outback is the 5sp with another gear...
The gearing's a bit short in 1st which makes traffic a bit painful but you get used to it...
Try liberty asn for the service manual, i think they have a link to the full set..

As far as mods go, get a tune as the factory one is average and maybe an exhaust?

Where in Perth is good to get a tune? Whats it usually cost?
And what exhaust bits does everyone do? I like it being quiet, but if its killing performance....

Ive done neither, exhausts sound good on the h6 but think they lose power if done wrong. Most just change the two rear mufflers, there's 3? catalytic converters and 4 oxygen sensors which complicate things if you want a full system.

Tune in Perth would probably be kido racing, its not a dyno tune rather logging your driving and fixing it from the logs, hence cheaper than dyno time, think ~300, though don't quote me on that.

MaximumMotorsports is a reliable mob that do ecutek tunes (im not sure about other tunes).
I believe Race Torque is another place that does tuning.

They are for dyno tunes but id say they would do a range of options to suit all sorts of price ranges (your looking at ~$1700 for a full ecutek dyno tune).

Otherwise i think a few exhaust shops around do basic tunes.

I wouldnt do a tune until you do an upgraded exhaust.

Looking at getting the 100,000km service done for this new car.
Have been quoted $666. What does that involve. Have looked around and people are saying they were charged $1200 or higher and had the timing belt/chain replaced.
But I heard that this model car doesn't need the chain replaced? Why not?

are you happy with the car so far?

the 100k service is a big one. It requires every single fluid to be changed, filters etc etc.

for a 4cylinder with a timing belt this can be expensive, as you said going well over $1000.

The h6 has a timing chain and is a non-perishable part - it will never need to be replaced.

The car is f'en brilliant. Love it.

Thats good news regarding the timing chain. It still seems odd that it never needs replacing. Other cars I know of with a timing chain, need it replaced at about 100000km...

not the subi. It should outlast the car unless something weird happens.

Not so sure about idlers, tensioners etc though.

Just did a quick search, replacing the idler pulley and tensioner is supposed to be quite easy...
