Hi All,

Fairly new to this - but was looking for some assistance as I want to get my old dog of a car ready for a bit of a trip in a few weeks (fishing/surfing). I have done some stuff on it myself before (fluids, filters, heater core). But I am looking at trying to find a mechanic to get it ready this time as I won’t have the time, space and tools and taking the dash out nearly killed me with the car knowledge I have. Wondering if anyone can help with:

Part number, prices and any info for:
Front rotors
Front pads
Rear boots
CV's (full Shaft)
Any info on a reasonable 2 inch body lift option
A MECHANIC

I have been searching the internet looking for a recommendation of a good mechanic with reasonable prices - for Melbourne all I have been able to find out is that I have to trek to Clayton.

Any mechanics that are worth the trouble please throw some names at me (north side if possible - North fitzroy even better).

I have called my car an old dog - Don’t be fooled - I love that old dog.

It’s a 1991 GL sports wagon - L series - whatever the hell you want to call it today – The sweet one with the scribble on the side.

Any info is useful.

Your L series is still called an L series

I don't know of any good mechanics as I do all of my own work. As for the lift kit there's a couple of options. The first one is cross-**** performance . com - dunno how quickly you'll get it as I think Jeff might be building them in group lots to keep costs down. I also know of another avenue but haven't heard back from them for details.

Those parts you've listed can be requested from FROG - a forum member here that works at a dealership and is great for ordering parts from or even just getting a quote. Andy's great and I've used his services for some time now.

The rotors and pads for the front should be found at any decent auto store - I've got my favourite in Romsey - O'dea's Auto Spares. Dave, Chris and Tom are great to deal with an don't have any issues getting old subi parts in

The clayton mechanic you mention is worth is weight, but can be a bit cranky at times from what I've heard. He will know your subi inside and out though!

Thanks for the info, I will chase a few of those leads.

I have tried & previously done some of the work it has needed myself - But have decided it’s probably time to take it to a mechanic to have it looked over properly. Unfortunately, some mechanics do worse work than what i have done as an amateur, hence I’m trying to find one worth the trouble and wont sting me - I also hate waiting for them to order parts, so with my old cars in the past, I have bought them prior and left them in the car so they know what i want replaced - (once the bugger tried to charge me for the parts i supplied, until he realised).

Will let you know how i get on and, if i decide to tackle it all myself - I’ll probably be back with a tonne of questions.
