Leone "Sport" instrument cluster in 4WD?

I bought a really nice dash board last week along with a few other things and it is the sort that had the digital dash, or "Sport" dash I've heard it called. Now for me digi-dash is out of the question for reliability, availability and wiring reasons :) And apparently the Leone sedans came out with a analog cluster in this style, but with no 4WD lights.

I was thinking I could take the Leone 2WD cluster and fit/fiddle with the 4WD bit out of my cluster until I found this pic

Image

It's from a years old classified ad, the car was for sale in Austria and it said this car was 4WD, but it has the analog cluster! So do these "Sport" dash, analog clusters with 4WD exist? Any in Australia? Would be perfect fit for what I need, otherwise is it possible to fit the instrument with the doors, lights and 4WD from my old cluster into an analog 2WD cluster?

Take the cluster apart and shine a torch into the car section, you will find out pretty quickly if the 4WD light is available.

I have seen 1 sports model wagon with an analogue dash and it was a 4WD, but it was in a wrecker and is now long gone sorry.

1981-1982 Touring Wagons came out with the LONG type analogue dash cluster

1983-1984 Touring Wagons came out with the LONG type digital dash cluster

1980-1984 Sports Wagons all came out with the SHORT type dash cluster

THIS IS FOR AUSTRALIA ONLY.. not sure what the rest of the world got

As for your question regarding swapping over, I have NFI but if you find one (preferably use a RHD one) then take it apart and compare.

This is from MY '82 Touring Wagon :

It is an Auto though, so when you engae the 4WD button on shift stick,
the 4WD light turns on in the dash, bottom centre block of rectangle's cluster ... :)

Add : ( Or in between turn indicators, 3rd row down )

This one is the electronic version :

Haven't got round to powering it up, so I can't tell you where the 4wd light is on this ... :( ... It's probably in same spot though - only its on the right ...

I was thinking of putting it in the Brumby, but not untill I've checked it out & made sure it's working ... :)

I believe this is either a 1982 built car or someone has swapped it over. Pretty common to be changed out, back in the day, as the digi ones always failed.

Does you car have complete plastic bumpers or chrome insert bumper?

Correction ...

Ahh I see, upon further thinking last night I realized for a sedan to have the cluster I want it would have to be 4WD which I don't think Australia got any. Thanks a heap to Paul and Bantum, so it looks like I'm looking for an 81-82 touring wagon cluster...quite specific hope I can find one :)

Also on my thoughts of swapping over the car outline part from a standard wagon, would be impossible since the standard one is round and the touring wagon one is square...unless I find one like the picture from Austria in RHD but I doubt that will happen :)

Cheers

Sorry.. didn't mean to make you feel bad. Very nice looking wagon.

No probs, hope you find one. I know Guyph just had one not too long ago. I would recommend you find one in a car as you will need the 2 little tabs that are spot welded to the firewall to allow the top of the dash to bolt up. Also you need to change the oil pressure sender and something else (but can't remember what it was at this stage).

All I remember swapping was the oil pressure sender from the factory switch setup. The rest was plug and play. I'm yet to work out the 4wd lights etc but I hope to get that sorted someday!

Go for the wide instrument cluster with the analogue unit - they look awesome and makes the car feel more like a car with information about how it's running (that's also pleasing to the eye) rather than looking at something that looks more like an economy box package...

I love the one I put in Sunnie the Brumby, if I ever get the chance at a brumby for me I'll be doing the same things unless it's one of those real mint condition units (that I could never afford), then I'd keep it stock and only drive it like a sunday driver :D

Yeah Bennie I'm looking forward to it, I just need to find one first! And wouldn't you need to change something to make the tacho work? Is it cable driven? Might be interesting trying to get that to work with the L series gear box.

The gearbox doesn't have anything to do with the tacho! The wiring was all plug and play - after I stripped out a lot of wiring this is what I found. Works a treat :D

Sorry, I should have said that when you find one make sure you get all the wiring behind it - you're going to need the dash board to fit it in anyway, so if you get them in the same piece the wiring just plugs into what's already there. Some plugs might have changed colour but you'll work them out.

Like I said it's been a little while since I've done this so the recall is a bit hazy!

When you say "all the wiring" does that mean cut a big chunk of the main wiring loom and take it or is there a separate dash loom that simply un-plugs from the main loom? If you recall that is ;) And I've already got the dash which is in fantastic condition, this is why I'm looking for this specific instrument cluster.

This is where the MY is different to the L series (the black sheep of the subaru family!) - it all unplugs unlike the L series :(

That's what is was.. wiring.. I knew there was something else.

Yes you'll mainly need the plugs, so if you find a dash, try and grab 4 to 6 inches of the wiring loom off the plugs. This will help even with matching up wiring colours.

The other thing you will need for all gauges AND lights to work is the fuel tank sender unit.
The fuel guage itself will work, but the low fuel warning light wont without the correct sender.

Note, if fitting the sports analogue dash to a Brumby, you may need to run an extra wire from the
rear loom's connecting plugs (next to the bonnet release lever) back some of the way to the sender (I have to on my 90 model unfortunately).

Better off doing what I did and strip the whole front harness from the engine bay to the dash only takes half an hour and then all you need is the correct Fuel gauge sender for the low fuel warning light as well as the Oil pressure sender.
Then after swapping the whole front harness there is only a six pin connector to the back of the car.

I didn't have to do this... I don't see why it needs to be stripped, everything is there that you need to run the 6 gauge dash - as I've said, get the wiring behind the dash until it's all disconnected from the rest of the loom and you're good to go.

Also good to know about the fuel sender light. Interestingly my brumby has a second wire at the fuel sender unit but only has one wire from the sender - I thought this could've been for a fuel sender light.
