Outback: I thought it was a metal part of the car - but it fell off!

Well, I know "normal" can be very subjective. But when my 7 year old was exiting the subaru outback from the back seat, he put his feet on what he thought was a type of runner board (runs just below doors from front to back - but does jut out a bit, so looks like a little step I suppose), but it turns out it is a plastic molded thing that fell off when he stood on it. I had to re-affix it and push the plastic studs back in. Of course, I just told him to not stand on that part - but the silver part (in the door frame proper) or inside the car is obviously ok. Seems odd because it could appear to be part of the runner board - although I would not stand on it - I can see how a kid could/would. Only had the car two days, so it didn't take long for it to happen.
Anyone with similar experience with an Outback? Just checking again that this is "normal". Thanks.
