How much does an L series windscreen cost?

Title says it all, or does it? ;)

I'll be needing a new windscreen for an L series so has anyone had one replaced before? are they jaw dropping expensive or reasonably priced?

Also...by the end of tonight there will be 3 subies parked in our driveway :)

New member :) Just got back from picking up my 88' L series Touring wagon that I got for $600 :D

Yeah it's got a cracked windscreen which I'm not risking being picked up over, and rust in all the usual places but I reckon it will get me around for 12 months or so. And it has power windows, steering, A/C, central locking and a 4 speaker Kenwood system w/CD player. Oh, and 13" sunnies and a nice exhaust...I think that's it. Interior is in great condition.

Goes well but the speedo is out by 10km/h, no different to my current ride. I think it needs a new or rodded radiator and an air freshener. All up I'm pretty happy with spending less than 1 pay cheque on it, pics tomorrow afternoon since it's dark now.

It's been so long that I honestly can't remember!

Sounds like a score! Touring wagons had all the electronic goodies in it. Unfortunately they still come with an EA82 :(

Cheers

In Melbourne, if you shop around, fitted at your site, under $200.
Ask the smaller windscreen places, big windscreen fitters are expensive, probably to cover the cost of their adds. I've had 3 done this year.

That sounds alright. For a run around car I was budgeting for around $2k so even with replacing the glass I'm ahead ;)

Bennie, yeah shame about the EA82 hehe. It's a clean motor though, doesn't use any oil apparently and the oil looks nice and clean. It goes as well as my Dad's L but sounds a little different. Oh it might need a new rotor button on the dizzy, I'll give this car a good going over and do my own little service on it before I drive it around daily.

Congrats Sam.
Is it red?
If so I think I saw it the other day.
Looked good!

Geez mate, what are you doing wrong?? :p

SB - MPFI or carbie? I'm hoping you got an MPFI - much better than carbie in my book! Plus you don't have to worry about fuel lines with an EJ conversion

Tambox that sounds even better, I'll ring around in the next day or two.

Cam nah it's white, with "Touring wagon" written on the sides of the high roof bit.

Bennie I'm embarrassed to say I'm not sure  I whipped the air cleaner top off to check for any signs of head gasket failure, didn't look much further. Looks the same as my Dad's carbie L, is there any obvious differences in appearance between the two?

If you took the air cleaner off the top I'd say it's a carbie. If it looks like the below image it's an MPFI (non AC):

And this is an EJ in an L series engine bay  (because I can :p)

I hope this sorts it out for you ;)

used windscreen is another option , pay about 40 or 50 for one out. Takes skill to remove/cut one from an L with breakage. Must take at least two to practise on - maybe my next one will be successful :)

As soo as you said removed air filter to check for head gasket issues - says carby

My workshop can get windscreens for most cars at 150-200

Yeah I guess the "Multi Point FI" in big font is enough of a hint. Yeah it's a carbie then, I thought about it a bit more last night before bed and remembered he said it has auto choke, silly me. I don't mind anyway, I definitely won't be converting this to EJ (sorry bennie :o) It's just not worth the hassle on a car with rust. Even it if only lasts 12 months it was still a bargain, and all the power goodies and comfy seats that will drop straight into dad's rust-free L series is a bonus.

No need to "sorry bennie" me - we've got an EA82 touring wagon in the family now too - the new L series (resto section).

We'll see what happens there though - it might be a few years before anything happens to that one unless the '82 shags out...

Hehe no worries :p

A couple of pics, and it's only done 290,2xx k's! Not bad for an 88' since you see cars 10 years younger with nearly twice that.

Are well,
Subaru less ATM.
Been driving a series 1 R31 for ages now.
That's just about dead, looks like he might be getting a cheap 4wd.
Unfortunately not a Subaru I suspect.
Apart from that he's been helping me finish my engine off.
Bloody slow. Especially when you snap a sump bolt off, lose bolts, and your oil filler cap.....

Snapped sump bolt? do you mean the sump plug? Cos if you're putting enough tension on those 30 tiny bolts to snap em, you're doing them up to tight  I think they're supposed to be about 5 ft-lb or something, barely tight at all. Sump plug on the other hand gets stuck easily, I think most plugs out there are rounded off aren't they?

Jonno, nope of course mere weeks after I get nice struts on my old car I get one with rooted struts, that are different to MY so I can't swap em :? Oh well I lived with buggered struts for ages I'm used to it.

Windscreen is getting done tomorrow; $200 brand new fitted in my driveway. I might stop on the way home and get some coolant (the rad is full of radiator flush stuff at the moment) and see how she goes temperature wise. Hopefully no need for any work there. After that I just need to swap the rego over and renew it (got a week or so left) and she's good as gold!
oh...and that air freshener :p

That's right!

Only if some muppet uses the wrong tool!

Yeah, they're different :(

Make sure the L series is somewhere that you won't have to move it. When I had mine down the fella said not to move it for 2 to 3 days while the glue stuff set. Moving the vehicle would have naturally distorted the windscreen opening that could damage the integrity of the adhesive during it's setting process. That's the BS I was fed anyway...
