My front wheels track is slightly eccentric

Post by 2nd Hand Yank » Thu Jun 28, 2012 4:14 pm

It seems my driverside wheel is a good few millimetres more outboard than my passenger side.
My L Series had a lift kit in it when I bought it.

I was wondering if I could correct this slight imbalance somehow.
To adjust would I be moving the motor or transmission mounts?
Body mount adjustment?

Just curious.
Especially because I might be doing a motor swap in the near future,
I'd like to have symetrical front wheel "outboardness/inboardness" :p

Wheel alignment

If is all in spec, does not matter what wheel is out by 3nm

Is a 20+ years old car, is likely it has been repaired / knocked about a bit, so the wheel alignment is the most important thing to cover off.

It's already had a professional alignment. Hmm...

So then if it is not scrubbing out the rubber, or not handling like it should (which is agricultural anyways) then what is the concern?

There is no adjustment in the body, mounts or anything else to be had

Something could be bent or broken..

My L does feel very agricultural, in a good way. The steering wheel shakes at 100km/hr and the likes even after a wheel alignment! But it's 22years old, no power steering but is still great to drive ;)

Happy to say mine didn't shake at 100 km/h,
but in a few spots in WA "beyond the black stump" I've had it up past 130 km/h.
My L Series can do 125 km/h in effortless comfort (steering and suspension)... so I have to watch my speedo.
Beyond that it's a bit "darty" but still manageable.

I found my L would sit on 120km/hr without an issue when I took the beast upto Geraldton last week. Overtaking wasn't really much of a problem but it certainly isn't the most powerful machine out there. I would hate to have the wheels you have on yours though, I reckon with the 13's it goes pretty darn well for a 1.8l!
I did get it upto 140km/hr in one overtaking lane but it was pushing it and the whole car was starting to vibrate abit. haha

Really yours doesn't shake? I have new tyres and got a wheel alignment done exactly a week ago... Oh well I can't be bothered trying to sort it out. Mines up forsale anyway as i can't afford owning two Subies while being a poor uni student! I am definately buying another one after uni though and going to mod the sh*t out of it!! :D I'm thinking Wanky Wagon style with an EJ20 turbo

Or the engine crossmember is for some reason not centred...

Wheel balance or a worn steering component would be the culprit. I balanced my front wheels some time ago and the car is very vibration free at speed now - makes for a much easier drive over long distances.
