B Spec Noise

Hi all, New to the forum and just bought a Suby my05 Lib 3.0 Bspec with about 105k on it. My question is this, I get a rumbling noise from the back of the car at around 80 and 100km/h that isnt there at other speeds. So for example at 110 the car is silent but at 100 the is the noise from the rear and isnt there between 85 and 100 either. It sounds a bit like the exhaust note but its not that and it doesnt go away when I take my foot off the throttle. Could it be the tyres? Or is it likely more sinister? Thanks for the help

im thinking tyres.

i had a similar problem (not with a subaru) but the rear tyres were 'scolloped' according to the tyre shop guys. 4 new tyres fixed my problem.

could be a whole bunch of things though. Hopefully nothing too $$$

Alex is right on the money, more than likely the tyres are scalloped, which is caused by two things 1)the tyres were never rotated which causes the edges to wear in weird angles, 2)the alignment is a little dicky.

To check this, use an open palm and run your hand back and forth on the tread of the tyre. If it is smooth one way, and your hand catches the other way(sort of like a serrated edge on a knife) then that is scalloping.

Something else to think about too is it could just be a simple wheel balance issue, ususally can get em fixed up for $20-30.

Thanks again chaps. Went to the mech yesterday and he rekons 1 tyre is causing the noise. Will check out berttus' self check for feathering and see how it goes. In any case I am gunna switch out the noisy tyre and see if that makes things better or not

I experienced the identical phenomena on a Gen 3 liberty and it was delaminated tyres that were at fault. I was very surprised as they were quality Toyo Teo Plus but it was definitely the tyres at fault as a new set of rubber sorted the issue 100%.

I hope it's just a tyre issue in your case as I was gobsmacked at the cost to replace wheel bearings on the liberties.
