forester

I would like to buy forester and notice,there is 2l and 2.5l engine,any big different between those two like 2litre engine is underpowered for that vehicle?Are there also common problems with certain forester models?
What i should look for,when buying?Will try lift vehicle at least 2",by heavy duty suspension or is better lift kit?Any suggestions?:)

I bought a forester recently and asked exactly the same question. The 2L donk actually goes quite well in it. Not super fast but enough power to be comfortable overtaking. Mine is a manual, I would assume the autos are a little more sluggish. The advantage of the 2L is it comes with a lower low range.

The DOHC 2.5L had headgasket issues, not sure how common that is in the forester?

I always check if the car I am buying has had it's timing belt done and clutch done (especially if it is around the 200k mark). Both of these will cost ~$1000 for a workshop to do, a good bargaining point ;)

I put 3/4 of a 2" lift kit in today. The fronts were easy, 30 minutes each, the back was a bit of a pain in the arse. Will finish it off when I get a chance, second one should be quicker now I have learnt some tricks.

Hi and Welcome IVO,

The difference in the 2.0 to 2.5 (besides huge power/torque differences) is the body style/shape. Remember there is also Turbo and Non-Turbo models. Turbo models aren't lifted, so if you go that way, you'll need to change struts and add lift kit.

Niether models have common issues as such but if you're going to buy the Forester for serious offroading then I'd be considering the 2.5 model, just for the extra torque.

As for lifting, I'd use complete body lift which leaves all the CVs (and the mechanical bits) all in similar lines to original. Unless you only go a 1" lift then I'd just go the suspension lift (extention tops).
