ea81 conversion wins awards

Regular forumites will know about my Tweety. A 2008 Pamther trike with custom roof, type 3 VW auto trans and originally a 1916cc VW (Brazilian) engine.

When I first floated the concept of an ea81 conversion I made it clear to all that I wasnt very interested in a EJ engine. At 55 years old I sought simplicity and adequate power in a 600 kgms trike with a restrictive auto trans occasionally towing a 500kgm mini caravan.

The low tare weight wasnt the only major difference in the overall trike ea81 package. On trikes in Vic anti pollution add ons are not required. So off with the junk. Various crankcase ventilation changes were sorted and other such advice with help from forum Subaru experts namely Bennie, steptoe and Toonga to name 3. Parts from Frog were easy to order and fast delivery.

I did receive the usual suggestions from some (and is understandable) to go EJ. But, this was a conversion for a machine with about half the weight of a Subaru Leone automatic. I couldnt see the need to go to an engine that was visually complex.

So what's the verdict? I am happy with its power output, ability to rev, its cruisability and smoothness. I know the trike will hit 150 kph and creeps up to 120kph willingly. I have recently asked questions about a supercharger. In reality I dont need one but am intriqued by bolt on power and its improvement to tweety for towing without complexity. This sounds a contradiction but I like different concepts. An EJ conversion is not regretted. However if I had a Kombi I'd go EJ as I would if I went bushbashing in an L series. But there are places an ea can call home. Ea lovers are like Holden HJ owners that love their old fashioned 253 V8.

The only other engine considered by me at the time was a 2260cc V6 Mazda Astina engine. Adapter plates are available but I didnt go that way for the same reasons. Also it needed higher revving. Would have been interesting though.

Since New year Tweety has won 3 awards. Trike Talk USA 'trike of the month' for January is a big award considering the number of trikes in USA. Sponsors choice award at Yea for the Bushrodders club and most outstanding trike for the National 3 wheelers club AGM at Echuca March 2012.

I'd installed motorcycle radiators up front for additional cooling and to keep our legs warm! But hindsight is a wonderful thing and this week the main radiator, from an Alfasud, was moved to the front from under the rear seat area where there was not much cooling air to be found.

Economy has gone from:

VW 1916 auto 23mpg towing van 19mpg
Ea81 1781 auto 28-33mpg towing 25mpg

An extra 80-100 kms a tank is welcomed.

Future improvements? This could include....supercharger, LPG, Polycarbonate windscreen, connect the electric motors that operate the Mazda sunroof, a custom dashboard that will incorporate the reversing camera, the digital temp guage/thermo fan controller unit and the electric brake unit for the caravan.

Its ongoing as its my hobby. The ea81 is just right for this machine in my view.

"EA81 conversion wins awards" as it damn well should! It's a sweet sweet setup you've got there.

Now go get that supercharger

Cheers

Congrats.

And all done with a moon boot!

Am curious, where would a LPG tank fit?

Imagine the induction noise of a SC on song...would sound very tough indeed

The SC concept is in its infant stage. thats another set of words that really mean-

I HAVE SPENT SO MUCH MONEY ON TWEETY I NEED TIME for ME (and the Mrs) to get our head around spending more cash. (she doesnt know yet about the SC idea)

I made an inquiry about a SC by email. Sprintex make a patented S5-150 twin screw SC (around $1700 for the basic SC) see

http://www.sprintex.com.au/sprintex/superchargers/

But they dont make a kit. So all the issues with blow through , suck through different carb etc is up to me. Frankly I dont want a blow job! and I dont want a performance centre manager giving me one either. lol I want a system I can (with the help of my ausubaru mates) to install and maintain.

And FI is too radical for me to get my head around and explodes the "simplicity" of my ea81. That why the Eaton 62 enquiry when he said a SU carbie is relatively easy to instal etc took my fancy.

But there is hope there and I'll pursue it and keep you all informed.

I'm amazed when at show and shines how many people recognise the brumby donk!

LPG would make it all so much easier with the SC if it is anything like a TC

google teeco products impco 100 specs
teeco products impco 200 specs
teeco products impco 125 specs
teeco products impco 225 specs
impco L converter , impco J converter impco cobra converter and the specs should help wet appetite or feed trivia anyway :)

Very true

Tweety, speak to Steve at Rising Sun - he has 'just a bit' of experience with SCing EA81s, esp with LPG.

Here is one - was nuts to drive

Having moved the main radiator to the front of Tweety I have a lot of room to move above the transaxle. However two scuba lpg tanks would still be a tight fit. Easier if there wasnt a weber nearby.

And straight gas (40L)wouldnt get me far so it would need to be dual fuel.

Lots of issues here. But its all interesting and waiting for inheritance is a compulsory option haha

Yes will talk to Rising sun if I get more serious.

Read this tonight. Very interesting how a Sprintex supercharger transformed a Landcruiser. 45% more power!!

Learning more about this SC game.

See http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic ... 194111cd19

This mentions a 1275cc mini with 8.8:1 compression ratio (similar to ea81)

extract:

The reason most use the toyota / roots type is that they are cheap (few hundred dollars compared to a thousand) and work well for moderate power gain in the region of 100hp at wheels
I have found standard 8.8:1compression on a 1275 with about 8psi of boost works well using a suck through SU set up . If you blow through a positive displacement supercharger setup you have to vent off boost when the throttle is closed even at idle. unquote.

and this

Have you spoken to Link Automotive/ HP Performance Products, as they do a bolt on kit using a Optcon Autorotor Twin Screw Compressor, and has been tested and proven. It sucks through an SU, not blow through, and all Supercharger, manifold, pulleys, brackets, nuts and bolts are all new parts. Its the kit I use and reccomend. I havent been on the dyno yet but power is approx 120hp. unquote

a pic fro the HP performance site.
