Just wondering what most people tend to use to keep there CV boots on. I have used cable ties for years but occasionally they give way making a nasty mess.

I came across these tonight on ebay... what do u think??

Stainless steel cable ties I have used before with work. Very hard to get a lot of tension onto, but are robust etc, and very sharp when cut off.

Would be good to use Dave for CV boots. I dont see any around where I work now, but I will keep my eye out for some.

I can get the BIG 6mm wide plastic cable ties though, they are a lot tougher than the thin ones?

I use proper CV clamps now after too many cable ties coming loose.

I do have two of those metal cable ties left over, don't know if you know but my coupes exhaust has about 5m of that fibreglass wrap on it, great stuff.

Do u have a special tool to help put them clamps on Tim?? And can they be readily found at car shops??

i get stainless cableties from work and we have a gun to tention them that tightens them up real good

I just use two pairs of pliers (one needle nosed) and an ancient technique taught to me by the wise man who lives in the middle of the Sahara.

Keeps them on pretty tight.

I use stainless steel twist wire .I have a roll that has lasted me 13 years to date.


Find a westen power truck and nick some tyes they have realy good shit in there tool box .

I use real cv boot clamps, used some long nose plyers with the s.s. band wrapped arround the plyers to get them tight. You need to make sure that there is no grease where the clamps clamp e.g. where it is builtup\taken off in the boots\shaft or it will never seal right and continue to leak grease. I used some sidecutters to bend back up the tabs that hold down the band and reused the old big clamp on the shaft side, so you only need 1 new clamp per boot.

Dito on the CV clamps. There is a special cv tool however you can do it without it.

proper metal cv clamps are the go i tighten them with a proper tools (i bought the tool from repco) you can get them real tight hey.

If you use proper industrial grade cable ties they should be ok. I just reuse the metal things I get with the cv boots, although my current car has cable ties because I haven't changed the boots yet.

You can buy the tool at most good parts places, repco, etc. ABW(read stanley) do one for about $50 mark. They are called CV Jointing Tool usually. I have one and makes the job about 15mins per boot including remvoning old grease/boot, repacking with grease and redoing straps. You will be guarnteed no drama with the straps only the stupid boots. I should know i have had a bit of practice between my ute and my bro L series, i have down atleast 20 or so, manily due to crappy boots.

Has anyone got a photo of one of these tools... i think it's time to invest.
