G'day all,

I'm trying to track down that old rally document from the Australian Subaru Rally team (I think) that has all the details of the extra bracing that they did the L series for rallying.

Keen to check it out and maybe have a go at a few of them to give Ruby Scoo some extra rigidity that she used to have, maybe gain some more too.

Search function hasn't showed anything up so far, hoping someone knows where the link is or even better has a copy they can forward on to me.

The main part we did on them way back was seem welding the body and also strut to roll cage bracing (front and rear). We also had a solid blocks on the rear mustache bar, which was also quiet a bit different in design. I do recall one of the guys on here had a RX sedan that was done up for rallying.

Other than this, maybe try sending PossumSport an email?

Not heard of possum sport, I'll google them

The document I remember is in that old school 80's courier type writer style font - the details that I remember was plating of the firewall and a few other places, but they're that sketchy that I only remember these vague details

Couldn't find possum sport, just kept getting domain name details. Had a go at Possum Bourne rallying and have sent them an inquiry email. We'll see how we go with that.

Damo666 ? I recall him telling me of triangular braces welded up front with guards removed - firewall to inner guard?

Take a leaf from the old London to Sydney - pre Subaru pressed lower control arms got the beefing up by plating along entire length

it is grainy but readable, with some rather interesting information on modifications.

Sorry, yes Possum Bourne Motor Sport just being slack.. thought you would have heard of them

Pete (Possum) had the best RX I'd seen. Had that finely tuned and always on song.

All good, I got there in the end anyway. Still waiting for a reply but not holding out for a quick one, I'd imagine they'd pretty busy after the silly season.

Now I've got to work out how these plates are shaped. The document reads as if it came as a kit you could purchase specifically for the L series... Keen to get some plating done if I can.

print the page with the templates for the kit. Using the template for the steering column as a guide, enlarge it until it fits the steering column holes. then enlarge the rest to the same size.

If you can still define the outline of that grainy image after enlarging it that many times

Good idea Jules, but I'm already having issues trying to enlarge that page to display it in an image in here! All I've got is a freeware Paint rip off at the moment. I'd love to have photoshop again!

If those plates are flat or only need slight bending it should be simple to work it out I reckon. Just need some plate steel now, I'll probably go for 3mm, 5 at the most - I think.

I am told that there is a plug-in for Google Sketch Up that lets you import images, specify 1 known measurement and it will work out everything else, even for 3 dimensional images.

Have not used it myself but have been told it is quite impressive.

Might be worth a shot.

Just played with that document in photoshop with exactly no luck.

the image that shows where the plates go is better but when enlarged becomes a mass of pixels.

It may just be easier if someone draws these plates on an "L" chassis then uses the cardboard cut out method to make these plates.

I noticed as well the plates are shaped to fit the contours of the body.

Who needs light weight in an MY hatch that's supercharged

I don't think it'd go astray Tristan! I'm looking at doing it to keep Ruby Scoo going for a long time to come.

It should be good once I get into it with some card board templates - best way to go I reckon!

best way to enlarge without loss is to print onto overhead transparency. Borrow an old overhead from someone and then you just need a wall, butchers paper and a texta! Project the image onto the wall and move the projector back/forward until the image is the size you need.

My sister's father-in-law does this with sea kayak templates and it works a treat!
