EA82T spider bellhousings are different !!

Noticed odd things with my spider bellhousing in that it is threaded for top gearbox to engine bolts - the long ones and the flywheel timing marker in the casting is on the LHS of the opening, not the RHS. Does this mean the flywheel itelf is spider specific?

See the pic?

It may be an optical illusion due to different angles of photos , I need to measure the distance from the blocks halfway join to the timing pointer. One looks to be about 15mm away, the spder 8 to 10mm from the split

and there we have it !

These babies also have a shorter engine stay rod so it don't get in the way of the timng mark viewing as on the EA82 carb we did belts on the other night

Would not have thought so.

Was this engine/gearbox combo from a vortex?

BUMP ! Added a second pic. If these are different enough to have a different flywheel, could send ya nuts getting belts timed etc !!

Or same flywheel and different bolt position on the back of the crankshaft to align the marks to the hole of the spider's bell housing...

You have to remember that the spider is basically the first step towards the rough setup of the EJ. I think if you compare the two engines the basic layout is the same, the cam box/head setup has been greatly improved, a spider like intake is stock on all EJ's, the engine/gearbox bolts up top are threaded into the bell housing rather than using a nut and bolt setup...

The thing that differs the greatest is that the EJ has been totally re-designed from the EA and thus parts are not interchangeable.

Cheers

Interesting. My guess is yes, there are two different bell housings, but they are made in such a way that the timing pointer is in the same spot.

Nice find though!

Using one eye, a rule on the block at the lower point (resting on the block) of the carby version I get 12mm from the split. At the moment, can't measure the Vort - brackets in the way, but thinking my estimate nearer 15mm is wrong thnking my 8 to 12mm from an angle of the Vort may also have that same error the other way so bringing both into same position. More on this at a later date.....
