rear shock help?

Post by thelman » Fri Jul 08, 2011 6:26 pm

ok, so today i went to put the honda springs in the back of rupert. Trouble is, i cant get the nuts off the top. The shock is turning when i turn the nut. Ive tried all i can think of and no dice. Anyone got any ideas?

Ok, to remove the springs from the L shock you need to have the spring compressed enough so that there is no compression on the "top hat" of the spring.

Then use a shifter to hold the flat part at the top of the shock's rod above the thread. Then get your appropriately sized spanner or ring spanner and go from there. This is how it worked for me.

If it's the honda strut, do the same to the spring in terms of compression. You need a hex or allen key for the top of the strut's rod to hold it still. Again use an appropriately sized spanner or ring spanner and you should be in business.

Cheers

You have a spring compressor in place i trust!

Use strap wrench on the piston, even an old leather belt will do.

If you must multigrips, be sure to grip the shaft well above the travel range, or you will chop out the seals

yes have compressors on, not silly lol. There was no pressure on the top, but the flat broke off the top. Will try the strap as suggested by sven

mine was just a lock nut arangement on the rear. 2 nuts, undo the top one, do up the bottom one and they seperate and can unscrew by hand from there. never had to go near the flat bit at the top. not the same?

thats a better idea the only other thing I would have suggested was using a file or a grinder to make a new flat section on the thread above the bolt

Good stuff! Easy mod eh?

How do you find the ride with the springs a little stiffer?

Cheers

easy mod bennie. Only hard part was compressing the honda springs. Could have been easier with a modified set of compressors. The ride is gret, i just need to lift the front a bit more now

iv just done the front of mine with front springs out of an ea falcon, i have been meaning to do a wrie up about em but still not 100% sure on them....it might sound to you's that they would be to stiff for a subie but you would be very surprised at the outcome...will let you all know very soon....

yeh they where pretty knacked when they come out of the ford and i had my doubts to, but they are the same diamater give or take an mil or two and had a cpl of spare hrs so thought why not....they are stiff but there no where near as stiff as you would think. iv been up the bush for a run with them and im very happy with the way it went on the day. i was with guys with lifted landcruisers and patrols and as always the subie showed em up....
