Low Range: how low can you go?

im dropping an ej22 into my L pretty soon. we're looking at going the Awd dual range gearbox out of the same liberty as the engine, but with the L series low range as its the lowest of the subarus. However, that being said, theres still a lot of difference between the L low range and a proper 4wd's low range.

just wondering if anyone has tried dropping the low range out of any other 4wd into a liberty box?

Just throwing around ideas, but im pretty sure with the torque of the ej i shouldnt be needing too much lower gearing.

If you can get a awd box from a forester 20l motor you will get a bit better low range than a liberty.
I have never heard of any other gear set going in a subaru box
If you want the l-series low range in a liberty there is a thread about it on this site

hm I very much doubt you'd find a gear that would fit in but definitely let us know if you do!
Lowest available in Subaru is 1.5:1.

I'm putting 2.27:1 in mine, but this is by fitting a whole separate divorced transfer case from a Nissan 720 ute :p Not practical for most.

transfer cases in normal 4x4s work differently and wont work mate.

and just for reference i got 3.1 reduction gears in the transfer case in my patrol :)

Change the crown wheel & pinion + rear diff to 4.44, should give you about another 20% reduction.

mike collins (scorpion AWD) does a nice aftermarket gearset but it will cost you.

L series low range is the best value

That aftermarket gear is the same ratio as L series anyway I think.

the beauty of the scorpion gearset is it needs no modfication (other than changing the gears) to fit into the 5mt subaru boxes

And the beast is the cost of the unit + fitment!

I've been wondering if the gearbox casing can be modified to fit an "auxiliary" low range gear set via the standard low range gearing. Huge modification would be needed - naturally. The idea hinges off cutting the idler gear set in half to make them independent of each other then have another set of gear like another gearbox off the side of these gears to give you extra low range or even a couple of choices. Would be good, dunno about strength/reliability and would definitely rule out turbo model subi's as I'd imagine the reduction gears to take up some of this space.

Dreams... What else can you do?
