No Jonno, Vortex core is wider(as it sits in car), tanks are the same.

Good question.
I was looking at getting a dual core radiator from the US back when i had the turbo wagon, but it blew a head gasket and it got sold.
I know the XT6 models had larger inlets and outlets like current model EJ engines do

Yes virtually everything is different in an ER27 , I know people tend to look at them as a six cylinder EA82 but they are sort of half a generation ahead in some areas . Different pumps manifolds etc , you can see where they were going before the EJ and ER engines were developed .
Unfortunately like all these early Subaru engines the heads and valve trains let them down from a performance and reliability point of view . A good cylinder head can turn some pretty agrucultural lumps into good things and many wished Subaru had done something about it in the EA81/82 era .

So i wonder if it would take much to get a Vortex radiator to fit an L series? Much less than making an EJ radiator fit. Would an XT6 radiator fit in front of an EJ conversion?

The vortex rad is 670 mm wide. The L series is 645 mm wide. both are single core.
The EJ rad is taller but roughly the same width.
The My dual core rad from the auto 4wd wagon is 590 mm wide but will give you 50 % more cooling than the tex rad.

I looked into Vortex radiators when going through catalogs of hundreds of OE radiators, no good because they are too wide and the hole through the rad support panel wouldn't expose any more core area anyway .
The correct size twin core for Ls can be made and is the only potentially difficult bit to get . Once you have one you use the wide L tank and the opposite side brass one from an MY rad . Fit the L straps and bolt it in . Fixed .
I'm not that comfortable with the cut and angle iron the bottom of the support panel idea , the above idea is a lot easier .

just to confirm and dredge up and old thread.
according to the pictures I stole from the internet (courtesy of all smash parts)
(images are of an "L" EA82 radiator in both cases)
the Vortex radiator has these dimensions
and the L series radiator has these dimensions
I then went out and measured my XT6 radiator which is 660mm wide from tank to tank (+ 15mm for the length of the oil cooler lines) and 360mm tall from the bottom flange to the top flange.(even if you remove 35mm for the top and bottom flanges the core is 325mm tall)
the outlets are the same as the liberty which is 38mm.
Can any one else measure an EA82 vortex radiator for height, from flange to flange, as I'm in the process of tinkering (nutter at it again) and if it works there may be a very simple way of making dual core radiators for the "L" and Vortex.

687,330,30,40
OK 687 is the length of the cores including the foldover clip section that fits the tanks, each tank is max of add 40mm each side, 330 is the hieght of the core itself, add 30 to include the frame

Thanks for that sir now I need to source one more thing (damaged vortex radiator) then I can begin my project.
