so i reckon my alternators packed up in the l. Any suggestions on an upgrade?

not many choices for the ea82, i went thru about 5 on my ea82, i was running wayyy too much gear.

do some research into MQ/MK patrol alternators. I think theyre very similar.

would that be petrol or diesel?

If you have your lights on at idle and you rev the engine do the lights get brighter? if so the first thing to check is the fusable links, as they may look fine but with age they lose conductivity. my brumby had the same problem it was the fusable links as the previous owner had wrapped speaker wire around the remains of a fusable link and hid it under the plastic cover.

If this is related to the CD player switching on and off, I would test the circuit the CD player is on first, then I would check the output of the alternator against the voltage specifications stated in an FSM or other manual.

from reading your thread about the CD player I would say it is switching off as it is either earth shorting or isn't getting a constant positive supply. while you will have made every effort to install the CD player properly the same cannot be said for the person who owned the car before you.

the previous owner who installed the CD player into my brumby crosswired all the speakers (stereo ran mono) and wired the power to the heater from memory even though there was power from the plug for the stereo available.

Look for wires that don't make sense or have excessive tape on them Im pretty sure you know what I mean

could be the petrol. Look on ebay, i was once suprised to see a subaru alternator listed as fitting a patrol also.

have the light issue aswell, but i have rewired the whole cd player, including taking power and earth straight from the battery after every other possible combo being tried. And have now taken acc power from cig lighter. Rewire includes speakers too. Where exactly will i find these fusible links?

near the positive terminal just next to the battery will be a skinny black box with a removable cover under the cover will be 3 coloured wires these are the links

not a problem as for the location of the fusable links Im going by memory

If another L series owner could confirm the location that would be great

was the alternator. Was pumping out 17.3 volts! Put 1 off an ea 81 on and all problems solved!

Yeah the fusible link's box is mounted on the radiator overflow bottle that's beside the battery on the Passenger's side - can't miss it.

And for the alternator, the USMB guys seem to use one from an MX5 or something similar.

wow normally it is the other way around they stop producing power. was your battery bubbling?

yea i know, weird hey. The regulator was stuffed, so the more it revved, the more it put out. Battery was fine! I think myself quite lucky

If your EA81 one doesn't work out, i have a working L series alternator in Coromandel Valley!

Talking about fusible links - guess who had one blow last weekend on the way up to Hotham (via the pub)??? And a 30A fuse shoved in there doesn't do the job with an engel and high beams

lol Bennie, I was naughty with my wagon before i changed all the links to circuit breakers...i was melting 8guage stereo power cable as a fusible link...
