So, lifted H6 Liberty or EJ25 L Series?

Hey guys,
It's an old question and it's been asked and answered before, but I'm talking specifically about my cars this time
I'm gathering parts together for a lockable, dual range box with 4.1 ratio's and L series low range. Yes it is possible, i have all the parts and it's not up for discussion
I am starting to question whether it should go into my lifted Liberty, or if i should go back to lifting my L series and sticking it in there and lowering the Liberty. I think most people know about my car's but I'll cover it briefly again:
This is the two cars in their current state:
Gen 2 Liberty - H6 conversion, single range STI box with 4.44 ratios, 2" lift, outback struts and springs.
L series - EJ25D, 4TFWD dual range and windscreen rust, otherwise bog standard.
Basically i can chose 1 of 2 paths at this stage:
1. Lockable gearbox can go into the lifted Liberty and it will be a horn piece of off-roading kit. The L series will get the STI driveline with 3.7 ratio's, crossbred kit and be a daily driver. Option 1 is nice because i think the Liberty will be a ****ing beast with that lockable dual range box + the rear CLSD and helical front LSD i have sitting under my desk. L series will need cruise control + some decent seats but otherwise should be a good daily. As much as i love my Liberty the L series shape makes me happy in the pants and would make a cool daily.
2. Lockable gearbox will go into the L series, add a lift, crossbred kit and it will be a not-quite so horn piece of off-road kit. The Liberty will lose the body lift, keep the STI driveline, return to STI struts + springs, add 3.7 ratio's and it will be a daily driver. Option 2 is good because the Liberty will basically go back to what it was engineered for, and therefore be a totally legal carefree daily. it's also got everything that makes it a comfy driver, plus i have the STI shocks and springs ready to go back in. The L series will be lifted with lockable box + clsd, with not quite as good suspension travel as the Gen2 but it should still kick ass.
So vote away, comments appreciated

Hopefully that all makes sense.
Cheers,
Rhys

Me too!

Just need to get it together... must ask frog about those bearings, anyway:
You know the H6 would be an awesome beast so long as you looked after the low range gearing while offroading. I'd love to see it with that box behind it - if yours breaks it means mine could too... Seriously though, if you're stressed about breaking it I'm sure the EJ25 will look after it without a problem so long as you're not dumping the clutch.
One thing that comes to mind about the EJ25 - the engine condition. I remember you talking about it needing a rebuild.
As for suspension travel, you've seen where ruby scoo goes and she does alright. If you're looking family wise later on, the lib would be the better daily.
Its a tight one, I'd love to see another lifted L series out there, especially if we'll be running the same gearbox setup

We should get jackets!
But at the same time, I'd love to see you do the DR L AWD locking centre with the H6. I'd think it a first, and possibly, last time its done depending on how it goes...
I think due to this, I'm going to vote the H6 as the offroader (I want to see what it can do with low range

), keep the L as the sleeper daily

I vote ej25 l series lifted.
If you do a 5 stud conversion put the outback struts in the l series it will have as good wheel travel. (rear strut will need to be modified to coil over to fit l series but it should not cost to much and you gain height adjustment)
And after having a h6 for 8 years I am really over it and would rather have a 2l turbo any day. Cheaper rego better fuel economy and much better torque. But the h6 is smooth and quiet and powerful (high rpm required) which is good for the daily.
Cheers

Also forgot to mention h6=heavy
The l series package should be much lighter, which should be good for offroad and less breakages (low range or rear drive shafts ect)

Are we talking with at least 2 wheels on the ground at all times??

I'm guessing that your H6 is mated with an auto? If you ever get the chance to ride in one that is manual give it a go - awesome! Loads of torque to boot, much more than a turbo'd EJ.

I think either way the L series needs to be reshelled into an MPFI touring wagon for tacho dash, larger factory fuels lines and no rust. Preferabley a grey one

Or reshell to sedan is also a consideration. All i need is a $500 special with no rust.

Yes my h6 is a auto but a h6 outback has 282nm @ 4400 and a gt forester has 245 @ 3200 so it is 1200 rpm sooner and a xt forester has 345 nm @ 2800 rpm

Naaa, Grey touring wagons are now way too boring and common, too many around. Definitely get the green one with brown interior..., Be Different:D

The H6 is a very underrated motor.
Steve (Rising Sun) had a lifted Gen 1 with a H6 on board.
Was unstoppable - left all the lifted and modified Ls for dead one Easter at Beachport - including a EJ20T conversion.

Well for me, I'd go the H6 lifted and make it a fully sick offroader and have the L as a daily but this comes down to lots of factors..
1. How much driving would you do in L? 1.8 verses 3.0 = fuel savings
2. Lifted H6 with 6spd (with competition centre) would make an awesome offroader.
3. Money to spend on both to get them the way you'd like them.
4. Parts available off the shelf if anything got bent or busted whilst 4x4ing

would vote for the l series offroader unless there is an option 3 which is the liberty as both the daily and offroader.
Why the two cars? If it is because you want a nice neat clean car for everday use? Then keep the liberty as the daily as it is a "nicer" car to start with.
Or just keep collecting subies, so far it is a my, l series, and liberty?

Thanks for the comments guys

Still pretty much a split vote, but i'm leaning towards the Liberty as an offroader.

My girlfriend actually said we should start collecting, she wants to add a brumby
There's no reason why the Liberty couldn't do both offroad and daily, it's done a good job of it for the past 18 or so months.

It's EJ25D versus EZ30D, and they're both comparable on fuel in the respective cars. The only money issue is i've spent more on the L series than i'll ever get back in parts or sale price, so may as well use it.
Good point about custom parts. What turns me off the Crossbred kit is bending a control arm, and then the turn around for a new one.

Haha never dumped a clutch, so not worried about that. The gearbox i got from gareth has the two oil lines tapped into the casing to feed oil to the low range gearing. All i need is the pump and maybe a cooler, but cooler is probably overkill.

There's no real difference in Vic for registering a 6 or 4 cylinder car. As for the power the H6 is really a different beast with a manual behind it.

I've emailed the bloke, he says it's got some rust although the windscreen rust has been repaired (who knows how well though). Anyway the interior is brown. Brown.
Liberty offroader is easy - it just needs a dual range + the rear clsd fitted and it's done. I think it might be the winner.

Hang on to that one! I've just got Kez into the continual modification of Ruby Scoo recently - took long enough!

I'd use a cooler. I'm planning to do the same thing with mine. The oil cooler doesn't have to be big, I think he was planning to use a motorcycle oil cooler - he got his on fleabay for about $45, you could pull this one apart and clean it out if you needed. Very neat little unit. Glad to hear you've got that box, is it in the H6 yet?? Would be a great start!

Why not lift the L 2 inches with some slightly oversized tyres a well as the lib - that way you can select your "weapon of choice"

Plus the lifted L would look the goods too! Both would still be good daily drivers IMO.
