removing heater assembly in ea81 sedan
removing heater assembly in ea81 sedan
I'm removing anything that isn't essential from the sedan, this includes the heater assembly. However I don't want to remove the whole dash as the gregory's manual says. I've pulled out all the gear in the passenger footwell, disconnected all the cables going to the controls in the center console. I've disconnected all the hoses going to the vents.
I've pulled out the stereo console as well. Is it possible to remove the heater assembly without removing anything else? I don't care if gets damaged, so chopping it up is something I'd consider.

14lb sledge hammer. Or do like resin has with his ute. All that is in there is the dash skin. You do have to remove it to get rid of all the crap up in behind it though. You can see down through where the demister vents were to the floor.
BTW, carry a chamois for demisting the screen through winter.

I'm putting my ej18 into it finally. I wasn't planning on connecting the heater gear back up to the coolant so I though I'd just rip it all out, save a bit of weight and give me plenty of room to mount the ECU.
The old engine/gearbox is all out, the gearbox adaptor / flywheel / clutch is all bolted into the engine.
Still gotta get the radiator modified and a few bits and pieces like radiator hoses, shorter belt ( no power steer ) and other random stuff
btw, when you put the EJ18 into yours what did you do engine mount wise? Use the ej mounts and slot the crossmember slightly? ( i think that's the common way to do it? ).

Hey stinky, by ripping it out, basically none of the vents in the dash will function, cos they are all interconnected via the heat box, Summer or Winter.
I changed mine in the MY with an A/C, and it was a bit harder to do. The main thing apart from the dash being loose is watch for all elec connectors that come apart. In the '82 one I did, most of the connectors did not have an orientation key in them as later ones had, and not all wiring opposite plugs are coloured exactly the same. Took me a bit of time to get them back and the right way round again! I suggest a marker pen mark across the plugs or number the pairs.
Also I am going to be a real sicko and be doing it to my L soon too, easier to unbolt dash, just heaps more shit hanging of it than the MY.
