2010 Forester TD Fuel Economy

Just hoping a few fellow owners of the forester diesel can post their fuel milage.

Im only getting around 800km a tank and i dont have a lead foot. Ive seen some saying they are getting 1100km a tank. How is such a difference possible? Best i have ever done is 850km and it was all smooth interstate highway driving. Normally refill just below the last mark on the gauge and on average its just over 700km.

Don't wanna make you angrier but, you want miles per tank, kilometres per tank? BIG gripe here in the past about distance per tank. MPG, km/l or litres per hundred is easier to refer to....

Driving mainly in Sydney traffic Monday to Friday I get a bit over 700 to the tank and have seen over 800 when driving out of town on longer trips.

The gauge tells me I average 7.2/100 it was 7.0/100 until the driveline shudder started.

This is still a vast improvement over the 9.8/100 I got out of my Liberty with the same type of driving.

Between 6.4 and 6.8 l/100km Canberra based, both city and country. Gives me ~800km until I fill the tank at the warning light (~14l left- this doesn't match the handbook, which says it should be 10l left). It was over 7l/100km new but the engine quickly freed up and economy improved.

Imperial mileage-wise that's 41.5 (6.8l/100km) to 44 (6.4l/100km) mpg.

Ok so not a Foz Diesel I know but my Outback Diesel 5 speed does the following averages .... worst 36 mpg and the best I have had is 48 mpg. It tends to average out at around 43.5 mpg. (You guys do the maths !)

However my point is this - when new upto 1000 miles, the economy was only about 32 mpg then it steadly improved to what we have now and reached this around the 6,000 mile mark.
My driving is really mixed and its very hilly in Halifax UK.

My driving style is like I just stole the thing - no mercy shown to the BM's Merc's or Audis !

My wife gets between 800 - 900 km per tank depending on how and where she drives, some times around 7l/100 most times worse.

these cars are sold as "fuel efficient" and are when you compare them to the 2.5 litre sti powered forester "S" (turbo petrol engine) which apparently gets 15 /17 liters to the hundred on the city cycle and 12 litres to the hundred on the highway

to quote my year ten physics teacher

"fuel efficient" would actually mean not using fuel which is impossible

I run mine down till the fuel light comes on and it's a pretty consistent 800-850 km's or so now. I do 1000km's a week and have noticed the engine "loosen up" a fair bit and the fuel economy get better now as i get closer to 20000k's. For the first 15000k's i drove it kinda hard i guess you could say, whereas now i've backed off a bit and am driving a bit more sedately.

I've also noticed that if i fill up as soon as the fuel light comes on, i can only squeeze around 50 litres in the tank, so the light must come on when theres around 14L remaining in the tank. That can still give us some good range with the light on. I did push it once and drove from Brisbane airport all the way upto caloundra with the fuel light on. The needle got down to the last mark on the gauge, but when i filled up there was still around 5 litres in the tank!

I've got no doubt 1000-1100km's per tank is achievable if you drive like a nana.

I just managed to get a little over 950k's out of my last tank of diesel over the weekend, according to the trip meter. I pushed it until the fuel needle was just below the last mark on the gauge and i squeezed in 58.5 litres when i refilled. I'm pretty happy with that range and i like being able to run the gauge down to the empty line without stressing out too much.

Now that i've tested the foz's range I can get back to driving it a bit harder!
