You may find this an interesting read - and in the article 3 x 4 - with the Blue MK1 in the picture, it refer's to as a 1600 4WD.

I was lead to believe that they were FWD only but about a year or so back, there was a guy here in Perth that bought a 96 Impreza hatch. It had a EJ16, AWD auto and had manual windows. Everything you would expect from a LX but with AWD. I am thinking it may have been a factory option that nearly nobody opted for.

I don't know whats unbelievable about it - an EJ16 with AWD would make for one pretty slow subaru I'd reckon, good for sunday drives ;)

Got a new project on the go Steptoe?

I've never seen an EJ16 AWD.. all the early Imprezas went to EJ18 when they were fitted with AWD boxes.

Although the EJ16 is pretty pokie and if used in a lighter car then I'd say it would work fine :)

hey if an EA82 can push a part time 4x4 gearbox along, I'd say an EJ16 will be fine with AWD :)

can't a fella just wonder out loud? Thinking the way manufacturers ( well, some, anyway) are downsizing in order to gain fuel efficiency. Wonder how a turbo EJ16 on LPG would go? I get the impression that EJ22 is almost too much for a FWD EJ in a MY or L , pushing the MY or L box , and the 2.0 litre may also be as well unless they were AWD ,so... step down to the almost free for the taking EJ16 ..that is all...for now, already have unfinished projects like my EA82T Brumby that the EA82T in the L sedan already has too much power in FWD form of 4 WD box, losing traction in the dry when it is most wanted :)

hahahaha.. of course you're allowed to think out loud but your mind is always thinking (which we all love) because you come up with some awesome ideas for us to build :)

BTW.. if it's fuel efficiency then why not go the EJ15

You have 2 options in Subaru 1.5L engines

You have the EJ15 with 74kW @ 5200rpm and 142Nm @4000rpm
Or the EL15 with 81kW 6400rpm and 144Nm at a low 3200rpm (thanks to a smaller bore/longer stroke and AVCS)

The EL15 was fitted to 2006 and later pov pack JDM Impreza's and will most likely give the EA82T a run for its money, but with much better fuel economy.

Yeah but the EL is DOHC which makes them more KW but also heavier :) Gotta love Subaru's way of mix-matching.. makes it easier for us to play later on

Very nice work on the up pipe.. IMO would work better than the factory way :)
