turbo ea82 questions

Post by grytvikken » Tue Apr 04, 2006 10:05 pm

are ea82turbo engines hard to come by and what are they worth. also are the motors just a drop in to a fuel injected L-Series. have a memory of the ecu being the same for the overseas turbo models and the fuel injected ones(allbeit with a wiring mod). i know that there are a couple of plug types but can you still use the ecu from a injected touring wagon? also if you could drop it in and use the same ecu what sort of improvement power wise and fuel economy wise would it be over a normal car with say a webber fitted.

They arent too hard to come by but most you will pick up will require an overhaul prior to trouble free motoring. to instal into an l series non turbo you will need to modify your crossmember or abtain a turbo one for clearance of the up pipe. If you have a 3plug ECu then you only need discriminate to turbo earth. However the turbo motors had a knock sensor wheras the non turbos do not. The Postie has run his turbo motor using the original 4 plug NA ECU with no problems thta i know of.

This is correct.you don't have knock sensor or boost cut with the 4 plug n/a ecu.You also need to use the dist and throttle body off of the n/a motor.Jaffa has been running the same setup for quite some time.If you have a touring wagon it is a very easy conversion, can be done in less than a day.Power wise this is what the l series should have run ,hills no prob's & economy is better if you don't drive to hard.

From what i have found, the only basic difference between the na and turbo ecu (4 plug/87+) is that the turbo has a wastegate control for higher altitudes and has a knock sensor.

The throttle bodys for the 4 plug are the same turbo/non turbo. and i though the same with the disty

Im currently in the process of turboing a wagon, using the mpfi loom (i found the knock sensor wire is already in the mpfi loom, how about that)

I have a similar set as above, TW with MPFI and turbo motor fitted. I dont have the knock sensor connected, dont seem to see a connector. Suparoo did you have one in your loom or did you adapt one?

In the manuals, there is a knock sensor unit for the earlier 3 plug, is this incorporated in the 4 plug ECU?

Also is the O2 sensor the single green wire device at the base of the turbo?

At the base of the dump pipe/cat, there is another device, is that for exhaust temp?

Advice appreciated,
Roger

Yeah the 3 plug ones had a seperate knock sensor, 4 plug is incorporated into the ecu.

Knoch sensor was already in the loom, when im next at home, i will send you the pin outs of it so you can check if you have it.

The o2 sensor is about 2 inches away from the turbo flange on the downpipe pipe.

I have the lower sensor you mention, but its not connected, and not needed.
(I know california models had 2 o2 sensors, but not us)

Ok, I have re-read this and the other replies. I am now thinking this exactly what has been done to my wagon. A Jap EA82T coupled to the original MPFI 4pin ECU and loom. This is why some of the sensors ie knock are not connected and the lower sensor in the dump pipe.

Hard buying an unknown conversion hey, but learning a lot along the way. Hopefully no more big surprises lurking, as there has been a couple already! Thanks for the replies :D
