Lately I've been looking around on cheap Subarus planning to clean up & sell as a hobby/fun & experience etc I miss having L series and I want one back again for little while and sell it again. Anyway please read below -
•• Subaru Leone GL Sedan 4WD (factory 4WD)
Body good condition, little rust (can repair very easily) on rear window (NO NO RUST on the front window!!!), body is good has little shopping centre dings, Dual Range 4WD transmission works fine, but a little problem I found was when I disengage the 4WD to FWD its very hard to push down - feels like it needs a service & oil change. Tyres & windscreen are good condition, suspensions are good, but will need replacing down the track - good enough to pass RWC - apart from obvious signs of RWC requirements are good sign..
Owner has gone overseas, housemate selling it - he doesn't know when last time it had service, oil is still brown-gold colour, forgot to check transmission. Coolant is green, timing belt needs replacing.
I was suspicious it had Automatic 4WD transmission but converted to manual dual range because on the dash it had automatic thing & Auto 4WD button on the right side of the dash surround.
Air Conditioning does not work, needs replaced front exhaust as it has a crack on it, needs a new A/C core & re-gas after an accident at the front. Does not blow smoke, even driving hard. 335,000kms on clock, engine idles a bit rough - maybe needs a good service & tune? (choke does not work) Has 1 month Rego $500 drive away.
•• Subaru Leone GL Automatic FWD Sedan.
Body in good condition, has rust on front windscreen in black part (common problem for L series) Looks like well looked after, 280,000 kms needs rego & new tyres etc, paint work needs a good polish, automatic works well, Dealer wants $650 for it. I offered $500 he said no. Problem with it, front windscreen is fine, but the surround is full of silicone - needs clean up, engine feels like it recently been serviced, idles well, but better than L series 4WD the first one I stated. Inside has little bits and pieces missing - easy to find & replace. Needs spare tyre.
Both L Series are 1986 models.
What do you reckon if I buy, clean up & sell them again? Get profit for them, can you tell me honest answer of how much I could be looking at to sell again with rego & RWC? something like $4000 for it (either above) after clean up, (ie. polish, fix up little bits & pieces etc) make it amost perfect? I need the answer asap.
Cheers

personally, i'd aim for a newer L series. 1987/1988 onwards.
different gizmos and whatnots.
also aim for a luxo model like a touring wagon or a royale sedan. they came with nicer interiors and luxury appointments.
would make it easier to sell down the track.
subaru parts can be expensive new, and nowadays, only subaru fanatics tend to buy the older L series.
buy one for yourself, have your fun with it, and move it on, by all means, but don't expect it to be your sole "bread and butter".
Perhaps a sedan FWD -> 4WD conversion may be worth your while? 4WD Sedans are pretty rare, and would be rather desireable with the offroading fraternity*
*Don't let mudrat see that I wrote this!! :P
some ideas.
